Supreme Court Is About To Get A Good Look At How North Carolina Messes With Voting Rules

Late last month, a federal appeals court struck down North Carolina’s restrictive voting law, noting that it targeted African Americans “with almost surgical precision” and likening it to the worst of Jim Crow-era laws.

Even as Gov. Pat McCrory (R) is imploring the Supreme Court to put the ruling on hold, the North Carolina Republican Party is acting as if the decision never happened.

In striking down the law, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit effectively restored seven days of early voting that North Carolina lawmakers had taken away ― bringing the total to 17 ― thus benefitting minority voters. Many of them take advantage of features such as Sunday voting, same-day registration and extended voting hours ahead of Election Day.

But the appeals court didn’t tell North Carolina what to do with the restored days ― only that they needed to be restored. And the state’s board of elections went along, setting Oct. 20 as the start for early voting in North Carolina but leaving it up to each of North Carolina’s 100 county boards to specify what rules to follow on those days.

That left an opening for Republicans. And on Sunday, they struck: County election boards should “make party line changes to early voting,” the state GOP’s executive director, Dallas Woodhouse, wrote in a memo sent to GOP election officials and later obtained by The News and Observer.

“Our Republican Board members should feel empowered to make legal changes to early voting plans, [which] are supported by Republicans.”
Dallas Woodhouse, executive director of the North Carolina Republican Party

“Our Republican Board members should feel empowered to make legal changes to early voting plans, that are supported by Republicans,” Woodhouse wrote in emails sent to county board members, the majority of whom lean Republican because they’re appointed by party leadership. “Republicans can and should make party line changes to early voting.”

The Supreme Court and election law experts have long struggled to set guidelines for when race and party affiliation, which are closely linked, may or may not be used when changing the rules of elections.

And for Woodhouse ― who calls himself “an unabashed partisan” ― it seems as though tweaking the rules of early voting is nothing more than kowtowing to party interests, not an exercise in invidious racial discrimination. (His own partisan brother appears to think otherwise.)

You be the judge ― these are some of the legal changes Woodhouse suggested to election officials:

Limited hours and thus fewer opportunities for same-day registration, which Woodhouse said is “ripe for voter fraud.” Yet the 4th Circuit said that claims of in-person voter fraud in North Carolina are “merely imaginable.”

No Sunday voting, which African-American voters favor as part of “souls to the polls” drives after church on Sunday. The GOP leader justified this move as a favor to poll workers who need at least one day off after working tirelessly for six days.

No early voting at campus sites, because college students are apparently not “entitled to their own voting site.” But the measure benefits them because college students often don’t drive.

This is precisely the kind of tinkering ― benign on paper but discriminatory in practice ― that could have subjected North Carolina to federal government oversight under the Voting Rights Act of 1965. But in 2013, the Supreme Court struck a key part of it, lifting that oversight requirement from North Carolina and other states and localities with a history of voter discrimination.

In a statement, Woodhouse defended himself and his party’s positions, which seek “to preserve the integrity of the voting process so everyone’s vote is properly counted” ― a rationale for North Carolina’s restrictive law that the 4th Circuit all but discarded.

“The county board members are an independent body, and we have the right to lobby them as much as anybody else, for Republican positions,” Woodhouse said.

Perhaps. But all of this scrambling is happening just as the Supreme Court is weighing an emergency request from North Carolina to reinstate the law ― including its reduction of early voting to only 10 days. McCrory, the state governor, has called this measure, the voter ID requirement and the other provisions of the law a “model” for other states to follow.

But will the Supreme Court ― and Chief Justice John Roberts, who in 2013 said that “things have changed dramatically” in the South ― go along?

Roberts earlier this week asked the civil rights groups challenging the law to respond to the state’s request to reinstate the law by next week ― around the same time county boards in North Carolina are due to submit their local early voting plans to the State Board of Elections for approval.

Irving Joyner, a law professor and lawyer who is representing the North Carolina chapter of the NAACP in the litigation, told The Huffington Post that he and his team are monitoring what is happening at these county board meetings and collecting data. So far, he said, some counties have bucked the GOP’s wishes and offered Sunday and on-campus early voting, as well as extended hours of operation at polling sites.

But with 100 counties to keep track of, the data collection will continue until right before the advocacy groups make their case to the high court. And the more they gather, the better the picture they’ll paint for Roberts and his bench-mates.

“That will be a part of our response to the Supreme Court — to give a county by county breakdown of what is going on,” Joyner said.

Living Richly With Less

In the past five months, I have thrown away hundreds of items in my apartment. It hasn’t been easy to let go of some things, but it has always been worthwhile. Part of this process has been practical as my girlfriend is moving in with me in a 230 square foot apartment. Most of the process has been personally fulfilling as it has made me feel more free an unencumbered.

Minimalism is not a new concept. It has been made popular by bloggers like Leo Babauta at Zen Habits and it seems to be a trendy thing to do. Some people may do it out of a sense of uniqueness or superiority, but I have my own reasons. Namely, living with less actually helps me to live more richly.

The Art of Living with Essentials

The concept of essentialism is far more appealing to me than minimalism. Instead of getting rid of everything, I get rid of only the things that are non-essential. I strip to the core, find what is most essential and remove everything else. Here are a few benefits and examples of living a rich life within the framework of essentialism:

1. Your possessions own you – Recently I had a conversation with a friend who is making around $ 12,000 a month. It’s a high salary for Texas, but he has so many possessions, most of the money ends up gone by the end of the month.

Many Americans exist with possessions like this. The home mortgage is so expensive that families aren’t free to travel. Boats, cars, and a host of other features people rarely use all cost money and restrict freedom. According to some estimates, Americans spend $ 1.2 trillion on things that are non-essential.

2. We fill up a space no matter the size – According to the LA Times, the average home is filled with 300,000 items. Most people fill up the space that they are given no matter what the size is. If they have a two-car garage, most cannot even fit their cars because of all the other possessions.

This is one of the reasons the tiny house movement has become so strong. My girlfriend and I live in a tiny apartment and may one day purchase a small, efficient home. Even when we visited the coast in Australia we spent time renting a tiny home. It just makes more sense, but it also feels much better. The burden is lifted to be in a smaller space because we can’t fill it with things we don’t need even if we tried.

3. Mental toughness – In life you will face trials, discomfort, and pain. That is the human condition. How we react to such trials and discomfort is dependent on how much practice we have. The reason people become spoiled is because they have consistently never had to deal with hardship and discomfort.

Living with less is sometimes not as comfortable. You might feel cramped, unable to do the things you’d like, and there is no room for luxuries when basic necessities barely fit. But these are all things that inoculate you from mental strain in the future.

The ancient stoic philosopher, Seneca, used to dress in the cheapest clothing and eat nothing so as to practice poverty. It was a way for him to intentionally build his mental toughness despite having plenty.

Radical Essentialism

At first it may seem difficult to be an essentialist, but it might be helpful to burn the boats and go all in. By becoming a radical essentialist you don’t just have a change in your physical surroundings. Sure, you’ll reduce your material possessions and free yourself from their burden, but you also have a psychological change. You will start to see the non-essentials in your life, such as people you’d rather not be involved with, poor habits you engage in, and others. You’ll find this to be a movement that changes the way you live and the way that you think.

Comment Sections Are Cesspools Of Rape Culture, Research Finds

One-fourth of all online comments at the end of news articles about sexual assault and rape include victim-blaming statements, new research out of the University of Southern California shows.

The study examined 52 articles and found that only one did not contain comments offering support for the accused perpetrator, the study said. Victim-blaming statements appeared in 1,097 of the 4,239 comments ― or just over 25 percent of them.

“I was surprised that so many people were so mean about these victims,” Kristen Zaleski, associate professor at USC’s School of Social Work, told The Huffington Post. “Even knowing what I know about rape culture, I didn’t expect so much hate and judgment and discriminatory attitudes and othering ― there was a lot of othering.”

Branded as a “first-of-its-kind study,” the researchers examined comments posted to rape-related articles published in the The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, USA Today and the Los Angeles Times between December 2014 and March 2015. In total, they looked at 52 newspaper articles covering everything from Bill Cosby’s accusers coming forward to the fallout from Rolling Stone’s flawed article on campus rape

If the accused perpetrator was a celebrity or public figure, the individual was more likely to receive support ― or commenters were more likely to attack the alleged victims.

About 16 percent of all comments included statements of support for survivors, while 6 percent offered support to the accused assailants and 23 percent included “trolling” statements about law and society, the study concluded.

Victims received more support and sympathy when the alleged perpetrator was not an American citizen or the assault occurred abroad. But in those cases, the victim-blaming comments were replaced by racist remarks.

type=type=RelatedArticlesblockTitle=Related Coverage + articlesList=57ad48c2e4b071840410b8d6,57548e2fe4b0c3752dcdf574,576d323de4b017b379f59fc1

The researchers found that one of the most common victim-blaming responses was when commenters gave instructions to rape survivors ― for example, telling them that they should have gone to the police immediately.

That’s not an uncommon reaction: This week, comedian Kurt Metzger went on an extended social media tirade about rape allegations against a fellow comedian, Aaron Glaser. Many of Metzger’s comments criticized victims of sexual assault for not immediately reporting their attacks to cops.

Comments like this send an implicit message to rape victims that “If this is true, report it,” Zaleski said. “It’s very directive and almost dismissive.”

In articles about celebrities accused of rape, readers would suggest there was a conspiracy afoot. In an article about Bill Cosby, for example, a commenter said that “anyone who doesn’t recognize the political agenda behind these attacks on Cosby hasn’t been paying attention.”

Other commenters suggested that the survivor’s story was too unbelievable to be real or that too much time had passed for it to be real. They also accused victims of playing the “rape card,” or suggested they made up the charges after getting too intoxicated.

“There needs to be a law to protect men and teenage boys from charges made against them for rape or sexual misconduct by women and girls who are stupid enough to get drunk and allow this to happen then turn around and blame the male,” one commenter cited in the study said.

The researchers also discovered a lot of disbelief that men could be assaulted. For example, one comment read: “Ask any guy, it is impossible for any man, especially a teenager, to be ‘raped’ by an NFL cheerleader!”

Some of the comments that blamed the victim also fell under the “trolling” category. These were more likely to bring up ― and then dismiss ― the idea of “rape culture,” denying that sexism, bigotry and inequality create a toxic environment that encourages rape. Conversations about “rape culture” in comment sections often turned into debates about statistics.

“The people who had opinions about who’s to blame, who were basically blaming the survivors or victims, they would use the words ‘rape culture,’” Zaleski said. “They would be somewhat up on the topic and [say] it was bullshit, and one of the ways they would do that is talk about false reporting.”

Often, someone would defend the survivors in the comment sections by posting links to articles about how rare false accusations are, Zaleski explained. The victim-blaming commenters would question the source of the stats, and then there would be a data conversation, she said.

The study, “Exploring rape culture in social media forums,” will be published in the October 2016 issue of Computers in Human Behavior.

Surprise! RNC’s ‘Women Vote Trump’ Event Fails To Attract Many Women

The Donald Trump campaign plans to use the Republican National Convention to change his image with undecided female voters.

But he has his work cut out for him if the attendance at a “Women Vote Trump” event held Monday in Cleveland is any indication.

Two journalists covering the event pointed out how poorly attended the event was ― bad news for a candidate whose favorite word is “yuge.”

Laurie Penny, a British freelance journalist, posted a photo of the audience featuring lots of empty seats:

About an hour later, Oliver Laughland, a journalist working for the Guardian, pointed out the crowd was so small that the panel members were forced to ask questions during the Q&A:

The miserable-looking optics come at a time when the Trump campaign is attempting to improve the Donald’s poll numbers with women ― which, frankly, are pretty terrible.

Only 38 percent of American women support him, according to the Washington Post.

Amy Kremer, the co-founder of Women for Trump, tried to put the best spin on the low turnout.

“I knew I was going to take a beating and a lashing for supporting Donald Trump,” she said defiantly from behind a lectern, according to Jezebel.com. “From other conservatives! But who are you to judge me?”

Jezebel estimated there were 30 people in attendance, including journalists.

By comparison, an anti-Trump rally held Sunday that asked 100 women to parade in the nude attracted more than 1,800 willing volunteers.

The Trump campaign hopes to improve the candidate’s numbers with women this week by mellowing out his often heated rhetoric, spotlighting his family, especially daughter Ivanka, and focusing on security, according to USA Today.

Whether it works will depend on whether women voters forget the many inflammatory and vile things he’s made about their gender, many of which have been helpfully collected in the following video.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims ― 1.6 billion members of an entire religion ― from entering the U.S.

He’s Not A White Knight — He’s A Human Being

Society says:

Men are not allowed to be weak.

Men do not feel as deeply as women.

Men do not have emotional attachments to sex.

Men are fearless and courageous.

Men are here to save the day, the damsel and the world!

Today I am throwing my hands up in the air and saying e-nough!

With thoughts and stigmas like this, relationships are doomed before they even start.
It’s time we put an end to the emotional imprisonment of men.

Unless we stop seeing our men through a distorted lens, we will always feel disappointed and as if he’s not enough.

Ladies, he’s not a White Knight, he’s a human being. He’s not perfect; he’s flawed. Just as we are.

As much as the big screen likes to repeatedly demonstrate the amazing, enlightened, self-aware man rescuing the damsel at just the perfect moment, it’s a rare occurrence in real life.

For Pete’s sake, Ladies, we have to stop this nonsensical belief once and for all.

Gender Differences – Real or Not Real

There are very few gender lines I allow into my beliefs and the ones I do are mostly hormone or physiologically based. There are many books out there claiming males and females are very different and we must understand one another in order to get along.

I am publicly willing to stand in disagreement with this for many reasons. (But that’s for another blog)

At the core level, the absolute deepest level of our being, we are souls. Souls that are a magnificent balance of masculine and feminine energies. Souls that came here to experience a physical body and the material world. At our very core, we are Spirit in human form.

All of us.

We may have chosen to experience the form of male or female, but our purpose for being here is the same. We are no different from one another. We are here to learn and grow closer to our Higher Self (God-Self) while existing in human form.

When we understand we are dealing with another soul housed in a male body, we can acquire a deeper understanding and appreciation for our partner that has the capacity to heal our fractured relationships.

Giving What You Are Expecting

I absolutely believe if we lose the White Knight stigma we’ve attached to our men and start looking at them from a new perspective, relationships en masse would dramatically improve!

2016-07-18-1468874361-2893789-whiteknight.PNG

Although I cannot speak to all relationships as there are too many individual and unique dynamics in play, I believe those of you who were drawn to this article possess the ability to alter the state of your partnerships by viewing your man through a clearer lens.

You can start by asking yourself this question:

Am I giving to my man what I am expecting from him?

If I’ve seen it once, I’ve seen it a hundred times. Women expecting to be nurtured, supported, caressed, complimented, made passionate love to (and the list goes on), but they’re unwilling to do those things for their man.

Somewhere along the way they chose to believe it’s the man’s job, not theirs.

By putting such lopsided expectations are on our men, we create an atmosphere of perpetual lack and resentment.

Frankly, you are putting the entire relationship in the hands of your partner and by golly, that’s an incredible burden for anyone to bear!

Ladies, he can show up for you. He can hold your hand. He can love you and respect you, but you have an equally important role in the relationship’s success.

No one person can nurture the relationship alone. Happy, healthy relationships require both parties equally contributing to the healing and becoming of their partner.

What He’s Not Saying

In my past, I had the belief that the man was supposed to fill the cracks of my broken heart. That my heart was the only fragile one in the room and the right man would know exactly how to make me feel safe and loved.

I was left disappointed every time until one day I looked deeper into the eyes and soul of the person I was putting my expectations on.

I discovered he was just as afraid as I was and his heart equally as fragile.

My entire life changed when I began to view men from a different perspective.

I started to see what the men in my life were not saying rather than what they were saying. I saw their fears and I heard their inaudible cries for love. I didn’t tell them what I saw, I simply began approaching interactions with them differently – with love rather than expectation.

The responses that came were remarkable. Softness replaced hardness. Kindness replaced anger. Gratitude replaced bitterness. Appreciation replaced expectation.

It was a miracle.

2016-07-18-1468873875-7792811-whiteknight2.PNG

Your man needs your love, attention, support, understanding and encouragement as much as you need it from him. He has his own store of false beliefs and fears just as you do. He is not exempt from the human experience just because he sports a penis.

Most men won’t display their needs openly as they have been taught not to.

It’s up to us to know that as human beings men experience the same emotions, fears and weaknesses as women do. If we want to experience the wonders of a reciprocally loving relationship, we need to step up and do our part.

And with this beautiful shift in perception, you will become the person he’s always needed in his life – his soft place to fall. You will become his trusted companion, the one who knows and understands him like no other.

You will be the reason he becomes all that he is meant to be and the reason he will protect his kingdom at all costs.

He will become the White Knight you’ve always dreamed about simply because you love him for all that he is.

A Healing Meditation for Injuries

By Yoga Journal

FNL

The best (if dreaded) remedy for battling a yoga injury? Rest. My left arm is in need of a major vacation from Chaturanga, but my mind is highly displeased by the verdict. I decided to appease my cranky brain with a simple visual and mantra-oriented meditation. I created this meditation while sitting outside overlooking a beautiful lake in upstate New York last week. The slow pace combined with the glory of nature reminded me to use them as healing tools in my visualization practice. I’ve been using this simple mediation since to encourage my mind to rest and my body to recharge, so it can come back strong.

A Mantra Meditation

Take a comfortable seat.

A quiet space outdoors in nature would be ideal if available, but even a cracked window or sitting on a balcony should do the trick.

Start by cultivating ujjayi breath.

Keep it simple and soft. Close your eyes and let your internal vision rest between your eyes on your brow. Set the scene for about one minute.

Introduce the mantra.

As you inhale, think to yourself: I am strong. As you exhale: I am healing. Continue this mantra for another minute.

Visualize.

Next, as you say to yourself, I am strong, envision an outer casing shattering off your body. This is the residual buildup of opinions, experiences, hurtful words, or anything that may have added to your duress. See it combust into a million pieces and flutter off into the wind.

As you use the statement, I am healing, envision a flowering vine wrapping around the ailment of on your body. This gorgeous plant is drawing up healing energy deep from within it’s roots and transporting it toward you. See the plant blossom as it makes contact with your skin, because you are ripe with healing and fertile with potential.

Continue this combination of mantra and visualization for at least 5 minutes or up to as long as you’d like. Once you’re done with the mantra, sit in silence for a few minutes more.

Orlando Turned Upside Down

“The World Turned Upside Down.” How prescient those lyrics are from the brilliant musical Hamilton. My 14-year-old daughter and I departed Orlando early this past Sunday morning and flew to New York to see the musical about the first fight for our civilization. We heard the news that morning on the airport flat screens.

While the tourist areas of my town are billed as the happiest places on Earth, I’ve spent more than 18 years telling people all over the world that Orlando is so much more than theme parks, hotels, and shows. The motto actually applies everywhere here. It’s an amazing place to live and work, and I happily serve as an unofficial ambassador for my adopted hometown. I chose to move here, start businesses here, started my family here. I had several other options, but I wanted to be here. It’s a real city — nothing fake or plastic about our people and the non-theme park culture of our city.

We have one of the most open, welcoming, and inclusive business and social climates around, partly because so many are not originally from here. I’ve lived in many other places, done business in many other cities but rarely seen such hospitality anywhere else. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised by such conscientiousness, but in times like this, it takes on a deeper meaning. Our city will not be known for this travesty. We are so much more, and we can’t allow one maniac to define us.

I broke-down late Monday afternoon in a corner of the hotel bar. I’d held it in for a couple days, been parental and professional. But pressure built. I called my wife: Here we go again. Eleven days before September 11th we brought our daughter into this world. I called a Muslim friend to make sure his family was safe. I broke down again: “Why can’t people discriminate between evil and the normal?”

While I know most Muslims are not extremists, our civilization is under attack again from those who claim that religion. Modern civilization faces a twisted revolution by those who would rather catapult us back to the Dark Ages. We have to band together and be vocal, visible and resolute – and it is time for political correctness to take a holiday.

We are once again at war for our civilization, and we must re-avow our rights and beliefs. Both sides of our political establishment must reconcile with five undeniable truths about the world today.

Truth #1: No one should be tortured or assassinated because of who they choose to love. LGBT citizens deserve the same rights as heterosexual citizens. What you do in your bedroom is a personal matter – it shouldn’t be a life-threatening choice or one that could get you fired from a job. Your religious views might deem certain actions as inappropriate or sinful, but that can’t distract us from living peacefully in our pluralistic society. People in the LGBT community share the very same hopes and dreams as everyone else. People are just people. It’s time they no longer be ostracized. Love is love.

Truth #2: No one should be allowed to shove their religion down another’s throat and at the risk of violence. That isn’t the American way. We worship who and how we want in our country — just don’t hurt another in so doing. And it’s perfectly okay to be religious, as long as you recognize that others can worship as they like as well. The extremists do not represent Islam. Literal interpretation of sacred texts in all religions can be very dangerous — it’s why Christians and Jews no longer stone sinners to death in 2016. We have to reach out to the majority of Muslims and encourage their outspokenness against this filth. Let us not conflate Islam with extremists. They disgrace Islam when they claim divine inspiration. There is nothing divinely inspired in putting on a suicide-bombers’ vest. All of the world’s religions hold this truth as a fundamental one. One cannot glorify the Creator by killing his innocent creations.

Truth #3: We are in a battle for our civilization, and we must acknowledge it. While our civilization is far from perfect, it is the greatest of all time. We offer the most freedoms. Ours is the most humane. This is undeniable, and we are unequivocally correct on this matter. The radicals hate our freedoms and the choices that come from them. They are wrong. We are right. It is NOT relative. If it offends the sensitive, so be it. Identification of our enemy and the war we’re in has a very clarifying effect to the mind – to not do this is to dissemble, to deflect, and to show weakness when strength is called for.

Truth #4: Banning guns is merely a bandage. If it comes to that, it’s the easy part. Fighting for our civilization is much harder. One shouldn’t hope to win a war when unarmed. When someone is this mentally ill (what else would you call acting out on such hatred?), it’s pretty hard to stop them… be their weapon of choice be guns or knives or homemade explosives or rocks or sticks or whatever. Focusing our “solutions” on guns is very inadequate. It must go much broader than that. However, someone on the government’s terrorist watch list or with a history of mental illness mustn’t be allowed to secure guns. If you can be identified as an extremist and placed on the “no fly list,” how is it possible that you can still buy a gun? It’s now time for a national database of registered gun users that all law enforcement can cross-reference. Closing loopholes is just common sense and wisdom, it’s not revoking the 2nd Amendment. This needs to happen quickly. No more empty rhetoric. Stop the next atrocity now.

Truth #5: Law enforcement agencies must be empowered with the ability to conduct surveillance on mosques and even perform under-cover operations. It isn’t a civil rights violation when the alternative could be mass deaths. If some fringe element of Christianity or Judaism or Hinduism or others were terrorizing their fellow citizens, it would make perfect sense to do likewise. We have to use common sense and not let politically-correct thinking cloud our judgment, ever again.

In Orlando, it remains a time to grieve but soon, it will be time to take action. The very future of our pluralistic, secular civilization depends on it. With apologies to Lin-Manuel Miranda: Martyrdom is easy, living is harder. When are WE going to Rise Up?

Life Lessons From King James

2016-06-20-1466459952-8369230-lebrondunkklay.jpg

LeBron James might or might not be the greatest basketball player of all time. It’s a pointless discussion, for now, because his career isn’t even close to being over.

He’s probably cemented his legacy as one of the greatest players of all time – 3 championships, 3 Finals MVPs, 4 regular season MVPs, and defeating a 73-9 team in the Finals after being down 3-1 while leading everybody in everything and bringing a championship to a city that hasn’t seen one in 52 years will do that.

I have to admit something though. After game 4 – after an odd and frustratingly passive performance from LeBron James, I’d given up on him. I just didn’t think he could do it. LeBron wasn’t playing like the absolute best version of LeBron – which the Cavs needed him to do if they were even going to have a chance – and the next game was at Golden State.

I thought it was over. And I thought it was LeBron’s fault. And I was irrationally angry and upset.

There’s a quote from former NFL coach Bill Parcells that I like:

“You are what you are.”

I thought Game 4 LeBron was LeBron. Passive, not quite willing to do what it takes, a waste of potential. I know – he was already a two-time champion. But two-time champions are supposed to play like two-time champions, aren’t they? And he wasn’t. He was playing like someone less than that.

I don’t need to tell you what happened next. But I will anyway.

Back to back 41-point games, when scoring isn’t even the thing he does best. Three straight wins against the greatest regular season team of all time, a team that hadn’t lost 3 in a row all season. Two wins on the road, in a building where the Warriors went 39 – 2 in the regular season. Leading everybody in everything – points, rebounds, assists, blocks, steals, which was literally unheard of. His stats in the last three games: 36.3 points per game, 11.7 rebounds per game, 9.7 assists per game, 3.0 blocks per game, and 3.0 steals per game.

Game 5 to 7 LeBron had clearly, well and truly, undeniably vanquished Game 4 LeBron.

Because he had to. Because if winning meant more to him than anything else, including being “himself”, he had to.

It’s like that quote from Henry Sidwick:

“One has to kill a few of one’s natural selves to let the rest grow — a very painful slaughter of innocents.”

And this is what LeBron said after the game, about coming back to Cleveland two years ago, knowing the team had never even been to the playoffs before:

“I told myself, ‘Bron, you gotta be patient’… but I’m not a patient guy.”

He didn’t say he could be patient. Or that he should be patient. Or that he wants to be patient.

He said he had to be patient.

Which meant he had to be something he hadn’t been.

Because his goal – “I set a goal to bring a championship back to the city of Cleveland” – meant more to him than remaining who he was.

I could learn from that. Maybe I’ll have to learn from that.

Here’s what else we have to learn from LeBron James:

“I gave everything that I had. I put my heart and my blood and my sweat and my tears into this game.”

How often do you do that? When I think about that sentence, I honestly kind of doubt it. Can anyone literally give everything they have to anything? I don’t know. Maybe I doubt that anyone could do it because I doubt that I could do it. But I’ve probably, realistically, only felt this way a few times in my whole life. Even though it’s one of the most satisfying feelings I’ve ever had.

“I think about all the doubters. Even with what I’ve been able to do in my career, I still have the same doubters.”

Really, it’s insane that one of the greatest players ever, a three-time champion, a four-time MVP, has doubters. It’s not logical, it’s emotional. Nobody’s career has been scrutinised like LeBron’s – it started when he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated at 16, and it hasn’t stopped since. He has, somehow, against all odds, been even greater than his hype. And people still doubt him. If he still has doubters, then you do too, and you always will.

“During the playoffs, I get off social media. I don’t watch TV. I don’t listen to the radio. Because at the end of the day, the game is won in between these four lines. You can have everybody else talking, everybody else saying what’s going to happen… but the game is won in between these four lines.”

Let everybody else talk. Let them say who’s going to win and who isn’t. Let them gossip about who’s better and who can’t rise to the occasion and who will fail. None of it matters. Not at all. Save your energy for your work.

“I’m my biggest critic.”

If you’re your biggest critic then nobody else can harm you. Your opinion of you means more to you than their opinion of you, so how could they harm you? Their words are just noise – sometimes distracting, but never compelling.

“You practice it every day. Just trust in what you’ve put into the game.”

I worry so much about my writing sometimes. Is it good enough? What if it isn’t? How can I know it’s good enough? When will it be good enough? It’s not good enough. This is shit. Nobody is going to care. And they’ll be right.

It’s exhausting. What’s the point in it? Wouldn’t I be better served by putting my energy into actually writing?

I write every day. Usually for hours. I read every day too. I put a lot of time into it. I put a lot of effort into it. I put a lot of me into it.

I need to get better at trusting myself, and I need to realise that “ego is the enemy” of trusting myself (thanks Ryan Holiday).

“We’ve been through so much adversity these last two years, so I just knew what we were capable of.”

Are you like me, in that you think you can accomplish things without any kind of adversity? I know we all “know” we’ll experience adversity. But do we actually know? Do we actually, with our whole hearts, accept it?

What would happen if we did wholeheartedly accept it? Would there be any downside to that?

Adversity makes us more of who we are because it tests who we are. If we want to get through it, we have to be more. We have to become more. We have to turn adversity to advantage.

Nobody, after they win an NBA championship, says it was easy. Nobody, after writing a book, says it was easy. Nobody, after accomplishing something they desperately wanted to accomplish, says it was easy.

They all talk about how hard it was. How many sacrifices they made. How they wondered whether or not they could actually do this thing that was looking closer and closer to being impossible.

Do you know what else they all say?

They all say it was worth it.

“Cleveland, this is for you.”

We’re back to that cliché of a question, aren’t we.

What’s your why?

It’s a cliché because it’s important.

Is your why big enough to carry you into and through and beyond adversity?

Is it big enough for you to work when you don’t feel like working?

Is it big enough for you to ruthlessly kill the old versions of you that aren’t up to getting the job done?

LeBron James’ why wasn’t about LeBron James.

LeBron James’ why wasn’t even about Cleveland.

LeBron James’ why was Cleveland.

It’s why he came back. It’s why he felt obligated to come back. It’s why he was able to will his team back from a 3-1 deficit against the greatest regular season team in NBA history. It’s why he was able to make history. It’s why he was able to do what he said he was going to do.

It’s why the Cleveland Cavaliers, despite all odds, are the 2016 NBA Champions.

Yogis Celebrate the Summer Solstice In NYC’s Times Square

Yogis, unite!

In honor of the summer solstice — the longest day of the year — yogis from around the world have gathered to celebrate the 14th annual Mind Over Madness Yoga event in Times Square.

Cultures from around the world associate the summer solstice with the renewal of mind, body, spirit and creative expression. This connection inspired co-founders Tim Tompkins and Douglass Stewart to create an event that celebrates our ability to connect with the universe through yoga.

“Times Square serves as a metaphor for our crazy urban lives,” said Tompkins in the HuffPost video below. While it can be challenging to stay focused and grounded anywhere, it can be even more challenging to do so in the epicenter of a city like New York.

This year’s event took place all day, with different instructors from around the city and eight free classes beginning every other hour.

Even if you missed the event, it’s not too late: International Yoga Day is tomorrow, June 21. Take a moment to slow down, pull out your mat and find your inner peace.

Women Writers in Renaissance England: An Annotated Anthology

Women Writers in Renaissance England: An Annotated Anthology

Of all the new developments in literary theory, feminism has proved to be the most widely influential, leading to an expansion of the traditional English canon in all periods of study. This book aims to make the work of Renaissance women writers in English better known to general and academic readers so as to strengthen the case for their future inclusion in the Renaissance literary canon. This lively book surveys women writers in the sixteenth century and early seventeenth centuries. Its selection is vast, historically representative, and original, taking examples from twenty different, relatively unknown authors in all genres of writing, including poetry, fiction, religious works, letters and journals, translation, and books on childcare. It establishes new contexts for the debate about women as writers within the period and suggests potential intertextual connections with works by well-known male authors of the same time. Individual authors and works are given concise introductions, with both modern and historical critical analysis, setting them in a theoretical and historicised context. All texts are made readily accessible through modern spelling and punctuation, on-the-page annotation and headnotes. The substantial, up-to-date bibliography provides a source for further study and research.

The Religion of Thinness

The Religion of Thinness

With so many women approaching their diets, body image, and pursuit of a slender figure with slavish devotion, The Religion of Thinness is a timely addition to the discussion of our cultural obsession with weight loss. At the heart of this obsession is the belief that in order to be happy, one must be slim, and the attendant myths, rituals, images, and moral codes can leave some women with severe emotional damage. Idealized images in the media inspire devotees of this “religion” to experience guilt for behaviors that are biologically normal and necessary, and Lelwica offers two ways to combat this dangerous cultural message. Advising readers to look hard at the societal cues that cause them to obsess about their weight, and to remain mindful about their actions and needs, this book will not only help stop the cycle of guilt and shame associated with food, it will help readers to grow and accept their bodies as they are.

Trump To Name Supreme Court Nominees By July

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said on Thursday that before the party’s convention in July, he would put out names of possible candidates he might nominate to the Supreme Court if he is elected president.

In an interview with Fox News, Trump said would consider “wonderful, conservative, good, solid, brilliant judges in the form of” the late Justice Antonin Scalia. “I’m going to actually lay them out. I’m going to discuss people … I think before the convention. I want to put 10, 12, 15 names of the type of people that we’d like,” he said.

“From that list, I would choose.”

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

The Grateful Mother

2016-05-05-1462480743-667127-bigstockMotherandherchildplayingt121613540.jpg

The mother, more than any other, affects the moral and spiritual part of the child’s character. She is their constant companion and teacher in formative years. The child is ever imitating and assimilating the mother’s nature. It is only in after life that men gaze backward and behold how a mother’s hand and heart of love molded their young lives and shaped their destiny.
~E.W. Caswell~

Mother’s Day. I have sometimes grumbled that this is yet another holiday designed by the retail gods so we might swarm like bees around their establishments, grabbing chocolates and bears and “I love you Mom” temporary tattoos. But I was wrong. The history of celebrating mothers actually goes back to ancient Greece. In more modern times in the United States, Anna Jarvis held her first celebration in 1908, as a memorial to her mother.

This year I want to celebrate the grateful mother. I know, this day is all about you… finally! But the reality is kids learn to be grateful by the example you set for them each day. Soap and water can wash off dirt from your afternoon in the park, but it cannot erase the belief system you instill in their growing minds with your words and your actions. Each day, you plant seeds of gratitude and compassion within the hearts of your children.

That said, I wanted to put down what I see as some of the wonderful attributes of a grateful mother. I take these from my own mother, my sisters, my friends, and some amazing women I’ve met along this zig-zaggilicious road of life.

The Grateful Mom Designs Daily Touch Points for Gratitude: Maybe it’s at breakfast. Maybe it’s a note in with the packed lunch for school. Maybe it is a conversation about the best part of the day at dinner, or even the reverent thank you’ s shared at bedtime. A grateful Mom knows that a thankful life can only materialize by practicing gratitude daily. Just like perfecting a sport or musical instrument, gratitude takes practice. You have to make it a habit. You have to make it part of your routine. Living a life that illuminates the blessings in life comes by…. looking for the blessings. We often confuse happiness with being showered with the things or life we want. And then we get what we want, and look around, and wonder why we are still not satisfied. The truth is happiness and gratitude come from being satisfied with the here and now, just as it is, stained with grape juice or sticky with gum.

The Grateful Mom Doesn’t Take Herself Too Seriously: We’re all guilty of it. We have so much on the to-do list and all we need is for everyone to just fall into line and listen to instructions. And truly, how would anything ever get done if we didn’t have a little drill sergeant in us? But, a grateful mother realizes, that even if she can’t be this way seven days a week, she must show her children glimpses of her inner seven-year old. And yes, you have it. We all have it; that inner little girl screaming to get out. For some of us, we’ve maybe denied her existence for a while, thinking we need to be grown up and mature. But she’s there. She grinning from ear to ear, she’s got a splotch of chocolate sauce on the front of her dress, an imagination that can take you anywhere you want to go, and she speaks the truth about what is important. NOW. Yes, that inner seven-year old you knows that check marks on your to-do list will not make you happy. She knows the only moment you really have is right now. So, even if you haven’t unleashed her in a while, let her out to play. The grateful Mom lives out loud, and knows that when your child reflects back one day, those inner seven-year old kind of days are going to stand out.

The Grateful Mom Understands She is the Keeper of the Dream: When I reflect back on the life of my mother, one of the things she excelled at was making memories. She had this ability to turn a day into an occasion, and could put special touches on things that just made them magical. She just went the extra mile to give me a happy childhood. But more than making memories, a grateful mother is also the keeper of the dream. She has the ability to make those special moments, but to also let those special moments fit into their child’s hope and dreams and not their own. As mothers, we all have a personal vision of our child, and it usually involves them being healthy, happy, and accepting a Nobel Prize for curing cancer. But a grateful Mom understands that it is not our dream to live…. we can nurture, and tend the garden of our children, but our job is to let them find their own passions and dreams. Our job is to tell our children that anything is in fact possible, and we believe in them and their hopes for the future.

The Grateful Mom Teaches Her Kids to Focus on the Light, Even When it’s Dark: Sometimes, life just plain ole sucks. Bullies, skinned knees, ants at the picnic, a loss at the championship game. Sometimes, it’s more serious like death, divorce, or job loss. Life is not easy. The grateful mom shows her child the reality of life; that it is far from perfect and sometimes it hurts. But, there is always goodness around you, no matter how dark the day. The grateful mother knows that thankfulness is not just for the banner days when everything sails along swimmingly. She teaches her child to look for the little blessings that sit within the worst of days, and helps her child build resilience and the vision to see that no matter what, they are still loved and blessed.

The Grateful Mom Realizes That Life is Short, Even When it Feels Like it’s Not: I read once, “The days are long, but the years are short.” Boy, it sums up parenting quite nicely. It’s not easy to raise tiny human beings. They have their very own brains, they don’t always listen, they oftentimes don’t agree, they are sticky, they smell, the list goes on. The grateful mother realizes that even on the days that it seems like the 24 hour clock has been extended and bedtime will never arrive…. that life goes by with the blink of an eye. Ask any mother who has just sent her child off to college. It seems like just yesterday they were changing diapers. The grateful mother embraces and celebrates every less than picture perfect moment, knowing they only go this way once. And the effort is worth it, every single bit of it.

Your gratitude is like a seed planted in the heart of your child, and will grow as they do into something more beautiful than you can possibly imagine. Best Mother’s Day Gift Ever.

12 Fitness Apps That Will Get You Moving

Everything you need for a great fitness program is actually in the palm of your hand. Smartphone apps can help inspire your routine, track your progress and keep your nutrition sorted. Need to wind down after a tough bootcamp class? There’s an app for that too.

Here’s a list of HuffPost editor recommended apps, Instagram-based programs and more. Put those little machines to good use!

For when you want to track your progress:

1. MapMyRun, MapMyRide & MapMyWalk

“This has the best UI [user interface] of all the running apps I’ve used in the past. One app to keep track of all your runs and records. It even syncs with your device’s music library for workout playlists.” – Justin Block, associate sports editor

“I really like MapMyWalk. I ended up taking a ton of walks when I first had my son because I couldn’t work out yet and just needed to get out of the house. It really helped add a little structure and data to something that I would have been doing anyways and often pushed me to go further, walk longer.”  – Kerstin Shamberg, editorial partnerships director

I love the MapMyRun app! It’s extremely reliable and motivating to see how I’ve been progressing. — Kira Brekke, video editor

“I really like MapMyRide and MapMyRun. They are both heavily GPS based, but keep track of everything, speed, splits, elevation. And the app has internal (sponsor based) challenges that let you win real prizes. They have great social aspects too.” — Troy Dunham, art director

2. Nike +

“I really, really hate running. But I love charts, and I love seeing when I’m making progress, and this maps it all out for you — during your workout you can see your pace and how far you’ve gone, and after your run it keeps track of ALL your runs, so you can see your improvement (or lack thereof, in my case). My favorite part is after the run, a celebrity athlete congratulates you on finishing (and I’m missing the years when Tim Tebow was in the rotation, because that made me laugh after every run).” — Kristen Aiken, executive editor, food and style

For when you need a reminder to get moving:

3. Couch to 5K

“It’s a great system to slowly get running more over the course of a couple months, starting off with super easy runs and getting harder as you go.  I love Seargent Block who is one of the voices on it… you feel like you’re in the Army! He’s no joke!” – Megan Robertson, director of video

4. Fit Bolt

If you’re a desk jockey, Fit Bolt will remind you to get up, stretch, do a few jumping jacks, drink more water or just breathe. I think everyone should use it. — Jade Walker, overnight editor

For when you want to use your wearable:

5. Workout by Apple

“I use the ‘Workout’ app on my Apple watch, because it lets me select the type of workout, tracks my heart rate and distance I travel, and syncs with my other apps, like Health and Virgin Pulse.” — Tyler Kingkade, senior editor/reporter

6. Jawbone + UP app

“I love my Jawbone bracelet and the UP app associated with it. Because I set goals for myself, I push myself to make them and I can see my progress over time. It’s what keeps me in line with walking, workouts, and sleep.” — Candy Bigwood, mobile art director

“I use the Jawbone wearable and their app’s ‘smart coach’ gives informative updates and tips about your sleep+fitness.” – Justin Block

For when you want to sync up diet with exercise:

7. MyFitness Pal

“My favorite one is MyFitnessPal, which integrates with FitBit and lets you track food and calories throughout the day.  It’s really a great way to track activity and how many calories you’re consuming, and hit weight loss goals.” – Megan Robertson

“It’s an awesome resource for counting calories, and you can use it to lose/sustain weight with or without exercise. You can put in your target weight and it’ll tell you how many calories you can eat each day (within a healthy minimum, of course) to lose those pounds. Really useful for someone like me who’s not into ‘superfood’ and just wants to keep their weight in check.” — Andy Campbell, reporter

“I’d say I’m (sadly) a recreational fitness app user at best. I open them a few times a month when I’m either feeling like a) a boss for completing a killer workout or b) the laziest person in the world. However, I like being able to occasionally check My Fitness Pal when it comes to nutrition because I’ve found they have a fairly large database for restaurants and meals and the measurements are pretty on point. It’s one of the only apps I’ve used rather consistently in the past few months.” — Lindsay Holmes, deputy health editor

8. LoseIt

“I lost 12 pounds for my wedding using it!” — Sara Wald, partner studio

For when you need to take things down a notch:

 9. Calm

“I put it on as background noise when I’m doing yoga or meditating, and they also have short guided meditations as well!” — Mallory Moyer, partner studio program manager

For when you need a little inspiration:

10. Zombies Run

I hate to exercise. Hate it. But this awesome story-telling app about a zombie apocalypse gets me moving. – Jade Walker

11. ClassPass

“It has allowed me to diversify my workouts and try new classes I wouldn’t have otherwise, if I had to pay a separate fee. You put in your location and you can find really great classes within .5 miles or 3 miles or however long you’re willing to travel. Plus, once you’ve started using it, it will start recommending classes for you based on the ones you’ve taken.” – Ashley Reich, executive weddings and divorce editor

12. Instagram

Instagram is great for fitness motivation/ new workout ideas because there’s so many fitness gurus out there on Instagram, constantly posting videos of their workouts. I always go to Instagram when it’s time for me to switch up my workout. It’s all right there in front of you! – Stephanie Petchers, associate producer for HuffPost Rise

In particular, people loved @Kayla_Itsines:

“On Instagram, I love Kayla Itsines, the Australian fitness superstar.  I love the before and after photos of women who have gotten fit on her program and how encouraging and body positive she is.  Even if you’re not on her program, it’s amazing to see what people can achieve in a few weeks.” – Megan Robertson

“She has a stellar Instagram presence with really positive messaging and great ideas on body image. I do her guides!” — Eliza Sankar-Gorton, audience development

Hillary Clinton Wins Delaware’s Democratic Primary

Hillary Clinton defeated Bernie Sanders in Delaware’s Democratic presidential primary Tuesday, in another demonstration of how difficult it is for the independent senator from Vermont to win so-called “closed” primaries where only registered Democrats are allowed to cast a ballot.

Clinton’s wins Tuesday solidify her argument that she is popular in states across the country, rather than just a “regional” candidate, as Sanders’ campaign manager suggested after she swept the contests in the South.

Most of the state’s top Democratic brass had endorsed the former secretary of state’s bid, including Gov. Jack Markell and Sens. Tom Carper and Chris Coons.

Delaware’s primary was a “closed” one, meaning that unaffiliated voters or independents could not participate. Sanders has won states with open primaries, like Michigan, New Hampshire and Wisconsin, but struggled in states with closed primaries, like New York. The only state holding a semi-open primary Tuesday was Rhode Island; the day’s other primaries in Connecticut, Maryland and Pennsylvania were closed.

Though Delaware has less than a million residents and sends just 31 delegates to the state’s convention this summer, Sanders and Clinton both still visited Wilmington, the state’s biggest city. Sanders held a rally Saturday while Clinton hosted a get out the vote event Monday — during which she gave a shout out to Vice President Joe Biden and his late son Beau Biden, the former Attorney General of Delaware, who died of cancer last year.

“I want to mention someone who’s not here but whose representation and advocacy for this state and for our country is legendary, and that is Vice President Joe Biden,” she said. “And the Vice President’s distinguished record of service and his love of Delaware and his passion for our country is truly inspiring. And we lost an extraordinary young public servant when we lost Beau Biden, and that family has done so much for so many people, and I am just grateful to be in this state and be able to say what’s in my heart about the Biden family because it really is an extraordinary family of service and caring, and thank you, Delaware, for sharing them with us.”

Only one poll of the state’s voters had been conducted before the primary. The April survey found Clinton leading Sanders by seven points, with 17 percent of likely Democratic voters still undecided.

Clinton had captured 1,944 delegates heading into Tuesday’s primaries, a number that includes superdelegates, compared to Sanders’ 1,192. If superdelegates are taken out of the equation, Clinton leads Sanders, 1,428 to 1,153. Either candidate would need 2,383 delegates to secure the nomination.

While Sanders admitted Tuesday that it would be “very hard” for his campaign to win if he has fewer pledged delegates when the primaries conclude, his campaign has argued that it could still bag the nomination by persuading superdelegates backing Clinton to switch their allegiances. Such a maneuver would go against the popular vote — Clinton leads overall by 2.4 million votes so far — and contradict the wishes of progressives backing his bid.

How to Survive a Crisis: 5 Steps to Shift Your Mindset

These are challenging times in an unstable world and chances are likely that you will one day struggle to survive a crisis of some sort. Whether it comes in the form of a relationship breaking up, an unexpected illness, the death of a loved one, a financial setback, or the loss of your job, there are many ways that crisis can touch your life and pull you down into despair and anxiety.

During these tough times, when things fall apart, the best way to survive is to have your own personal strategy for coping with stress and gradually putting the pieces back together again. It’s normal to experience shock and self-pity in the early stages of a crisis, but the sooner you can regroup and turn your attention to more positive actions, the faster you’ll be on your way to recovery.

However, it’s important to not repress your feelings of sadness and grief. Accept and embrace all of your emotions, but give some of your attention to positive behaviors that can slowly lift you back up to a place of functioning. As the Serenity Prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr states:

“Grant me serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.”

The crisis we are experiencing and our emotions about it usually cannot be changed–they simply must be accepted as they are. But what can be changed is our mindset: how we view the event that has occurred and the actions that we take as a result of that view. Here is a five-step strategy for a “mindset makeover” to help you look at life’s challenges with the serenity, courage and wisdom you need to survive:

1. Gratitude

This first step may seem counter-intuitive in the midst of a crisis: how can you be thankful when destruction is all around you? But it is crucial to your survival that you spend some time each day looking for reasons to be grateful, no matter how thin or fragile they might be.

Even within the deepest suffering there is still beauty: music, poetry, the colors of the sunset, laughter, hugs, trees. Find just one thing to be thankful for every day and hold on to that thread: there is goodness–somewhere, somehow–in everything.

2. Release Your Expectations

When things fall apart you can be crushed by the reality that your hopes and expectations for the future have disintegrated. The more you are attached to your desires for something that can no longer happen, the more your suffering intensifies.

See yourself letting go, one-by-one, of each of your dreams that have been shattered. Even though you might feel empty inside when you give up your expectations, remember that you are making space for something new that is yet to come.

3. Awareness in the Present Moment

Try to keep your focus on what’s happening right here, right now, rather than dwelling on the past or future. Creativity, love and healing exist only in the present moment and your thoughts and energy need to be focused on the here and now in order to receive the benefits of those forces.

Resist the urge to numb yourself or “check out” so that you won’t have to feel the emotions that are arising within you. Instead, take some deep breaths to help you ground in the present moment and welcome whatever feelings come into your awareness.

4. Compassion for Yourself and Others

During a time of hardship it is important to find love wherever you can–and if you are really looking for it you will see that love is everywhere. But dark times and suffering can cloud your ability to recognize love and you might even feel that love has disappeared from your world.

Cultivate compassion on a daily basis by sitting quietly for a few minutes and imagining that you are breathing in love for yourself until you are filled with positive energy. Then breathe out love, first for those around you who are suffering, then for all living beings, then for the entire planet, and finally, the entire Universe. By practicing each day you will gradually increase your capacity to recognize love and to share it in everything that you do.

5. Equanimity

To survive a crisis you will need to strengthen your ability to find balance and peace, even in the middle of a raging storm. No matter how chaotic your life seems right now, there is within you a place of tranquility and calm, but you might not be familiar with it if you haven’t yet learned to quiet your mind.

One exercise to broaden your center of calmness is to focus your attention within and imagine yourself floating on a raft in perfectly still water. Keep taking slow deep breaths as you watch the storms that are raging around you gradually dissipate. The more you practice connecting with your still center now, the more you will be able to discover equanimity when a disaster occurs in your life.

If you are able to face your next crisis with the G.R.A.C.E. of these 5 steps, you will likely discover that there is a hidden jewel within each tragedy. You will learn how to grow through life’s challenges and become the best person you can possibly be, while also finding meaning in every twist and turn of existence. You will then become an alchemist who can convert the leaden moments of life into gold and find that you are rich beyond your wildest imagination.

The Mountain’s Daily Diet Is More Shocking Than Anything On ‘Game Of Thrones’

You want a “mountain” body? You better eat b**ch.

At least that’s what “Game of Thrones” actor Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson (he goes by Thor for short) does to achieve his massive frame. Björnsson, who is currently in competition to be the World’s Strongest Man, plays Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane, a now Frankenstein-like monster with a penchant for violence and the ability to “take the head off a horse with a single swing of his sword.”

Horse decapitations aren’t for the weak-bodied apparently, because Björnsson has to consume an insane amount of food to keep himself in shape. The Icelandic strongman shared his daily diet on social media to satiate fans’ curiosities about what it takes to be the “Mountain.”

*Spoiler alert* he eats a s**t ton of eggs
