Citizen Explorer

Citizen Explorer

It was November 1806. The explorers had gone without food for one day, then two. Their leader, not yet thirty, drove on, determined to ascend the great mountain. Waist deep in snow, he reluctantly turned back. But Zebulon Pike had not been defeated. His name remained on the unclimbed peak-and new adventures lay ahead of him and his republic. In Citizen Explorer, historian Jared Orsi provides the first modern biography of this soldier and explorer, who rivaled contemporaries Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Born in 1779, Pike joined the army and served in frontier posts in the Ohio River valley before embarking on a series of astonishing expeditions. He sought the headwaters of the Mississippi and later the sources of the Arkansas and Red Rivers, which led him to Pike’s Peak and capture by Spanish forces. Along the way, he met Aaron Burr and General James Wilkinson; Auguste and Pierre Couteau, patriarchs of St. Louis’s most powerful fur-trading family, who sought to make themselves indispensible to Jefferson’s administration; as well as British fur-traders, Native Americans, and officers of the Spanish empire, all of whom resisted the expansion of the United States. Through Pike’s life, Orsi examines how American nationalism thinned as it stretched west, from the Jeffersonian idealism on the Atlantic to a practical, materialist sensibility on the frontier. Surveying and gathering data, Pike sought to incorporate these distant territories into the republic, to overlay the west with the American map grid; yet he became increasingly dependent for survival on people who had no attachment to the nation he served. He eventually died in that service, in a victorious battle in the War of 1812. Written from an environmental perspective, rich in cultural and political context, Citizen Explorer is a state-of-the-art biography of a remarkable man.

Trump Wants To Be ‘America’s Putin’: Here Is How He’ll Do It

Donald Trump does not just admire Vladimir Putin. He wants to be Vladimir Putin, American-style.

Putin’s presidency provides him a monopoly of power and also control of the Russian economy. He has used that power to make himself, and a small group of insiders, very wealthy, to suppress criticism, and to exact revenge on opponents.

That is what Donald Trump has tried to do all his life. At his campaign rallies, he already cheers on his goons. With the presidency, and all that power, he can make himself very rich, and broach no criticism. What more could any narcissist want?

If one can stand the stench for a moment, put yourself into Trump’s shoes. Born into the lap of luxury and taught that your sh*t does not stink (a.k.a., the making of a narcissist), he has no capacity for guilt, shame or remorse. And, he has admitted it without any qualms: when asked how he felt when bad things happen, he said “nothing matters”.

He brandishes his wealth to push others around with lawsuits they cannot afford, and harassment. (A.k.a., a petty tyrant, and thug.) He deliberately surrounds himself with “unsuccessful” people so he will have their fawning respect. (E.g., the “latino outreach” chief of his campaign has filed for bankruptcy 14 times!)

Trump has no actual talent, and the attention span of a three-year old on any subject — other than himself, that is… His uncle is an MIT professor, his sister is a judge and he is… what? Basically, a flim-flam man.

Narcissists generally “know” at their core that there is nothing really there, but they must reject that thought in less than a nanosecond, lest their entire psychological façade collapses. Ivanka Trump revealed a deep insight when, complaining about Kellyanne Conway’s assertion that the campaign staff had “scolded” Trump for his debate performance, said, “no one scolds my father”.

Really?

Meanwhile, it must grate on Trump’s ego to have had to watch truly talented people make much greater fortunes by actually creating something of value, and without millions from daddy (one can gauge how much daddy’s help kills Trump because he tries so hard to diminish or deny it): Apple’s Steve Jobs (part Syrian background, how infuriating!), Michael Bloomberg (a Jew, also infuriating), Bill Gates (world’s wealthiest man, a nerd), Carlos Slim (a Mexican!!), George Rathmann (a scientist!),while many of his own businesses have failed (as Penn Gillette said, “Trump could not sell steak to an obese nation”), and he has had to defraud people (Trump University) or stiff them (vendors and employees) out of millions of dollars. [By my rough calculation, Trump has made at least $ 40M by not paying vendors or employees what their contracts called for].

But, taking control of a government has made huge fortunes for other sociopaths. Vladimir Putin, his buddy Viktor Yanukovych (Ukraine) for whom a Trump campaign manager also worked, among other things, to undermine NATO, Gulf State rulers, the Sheikh of Brunei, Ferdinand Marcos, Saddam Hussein, and so forth. Name a despot, and one will always find a large fortune.

Power. Power for its own sake, power to exact revenge, and power to amass a level of wealth to which that he has always aspired. Most truly wealthy people either prefer not having it known, certainly not discussed, and usually give low-ball figures. Or, as Texas oil billionaire Lamar Hunt once said, “if you know how much you are worth, you are not very wealthy”.

Not Donald Trump. This is the be-all and end-all of his existence. And, others must know about it, otherwise it does not satisfy his insatiable ego needs.

And, that is what Trump aspires to do. If, today, he has to win women’s votes by concocting some gerry-rigged scheme he can call “child care,” and allege that no one ever addressed it before he did, then he will do it. He could not care a hair on his diminishing pate about children, women, or care.

If he has to tell blue collar workers that he will bring back their jobs, he will tell them that — but, what he will not do is bring back his own jobs because he can make larger profits by keeping them where they are. And, no one has ever explained how money trickles down from the enormous tax cuts to depressed regions — it doesn’t.

He told coal workers he would bring back their jobs — despite natural gas undermining the coal market regardless of government regulations. He knows he can do nothing about it, but tells them anyhow.

So, here is what a Trump presidency will look like. Trump will be granted favorable tax breaks and other concessions in the US, and around the world in exchange for US foreign policy changes such as removing sanctions from Vladimir’s friends, , and his “blind trust children” will use them to grow his fortune. He will administer the law however he chooses, and the Republican House will never impeach him. He will, e.g., tell businesses they can flaunt EPA rules, not abide by OSHA standards, and so forth.

How will he do this? Do we not have “checks-and-balances”? Not to Donald Trump who, as Mr. Khan said at the convention, has likely never read the Constitution, and certainly cares nothing for it.

First, all right wing despots move to control the judicial system. Why? Because unlike kings, who ruled under the “divine right theory”, the despots have no legitimacy. Hence, they have to create it.

The fire-drill to take absolute control is frighteningly simple: Trump will fire all the US Attorneys and replace them with people whose only mission is to protect and extend Trump influence. He will demand, in advance, a signed letter of resignation that he can date whenever he finds them not doing what he wants.

The same will be true of judges, and even Supreme Court Justices. He will appoint some bozo to the Supreme Court whose only judicial philosophy is to help and protect Donald Trump.

And, there you have it. The complete takeover of the judicial system. With his other actions now protected by the imprimatur of “law”, Trump will proceed to take over the economy and use monopoly of power for his own ends.

Most leaders who care about performing their jobs well look for people who are better than they are. Not Donald Trump. He wants inferior people who, therefore, will respect him. Translation: he will find people who will do what he says because they are thankful to have the power and prestige.

Through the National Security Agency, that monitors everyone’s messages, calls, emails, and so forth, Trump will gain total control over society — exactly the danger Eric Snowden sacrificed to expose. The head of NSA — are you thinking Rudy Guiliani? The man responsible for police and firefighters’ deaths by ignoring expert advice after the World Trade Center bombing in 1993, and placed communications hub back at the WTC, so that firefighters and police responding to 9/11 had no radio communications.

If Trump asks him to mine for information he can use against anyone or any company or any official, do you really think Rudy will deny him? After all, Rudy himself compared Putin favorably to Obama because Putin made “quick decisions”, whereas Obama had to think about it, and also discuss it with others.

And, of course, do not forget the IRS. The Commissioner will be a Trump crony. Trump’s back tax returns will be mysteriously “lost” on the IRS computers. And, while Lois Lerner was merely doing her job, determining whether special tax preferences for “social welfare” groups applied to organizations with names that included “Party”, Trump’s IRS will resemble nothing like we have ever seen. Critics will be audited, and prosecuted by Trump’s US attorneys.

Again, any agency head that does not provide Trump with what he wants will be fired. Trump will have those undated, signed, letters of resignation in his back pocket, so it will all seem legal.

What about the media? Will they not be exposing all of these gross transgressions daily, and riling up the public? Of course not. The media will, at best, present “both sides of the debate” as if they had legal and moral equivalence, but, after a time, even that will become more than Trump is willing to stomach. As he has already in his campaign, he will simply deny access to himself and any member of the Administration. Without access, the medias’ ratings will wither. And, thus, so will its financial viability. Rupert Murdoch, however, will do great.

And, then, of course, will come the renewals of FCC licenses. If you are a critic of Trump, or even air too many of his critics, do not bet on a license renewal.

Not all of this will happen at once. It will be a gradual, but deliberate destruction of the democracy and justice, of a balanced market system, all to serve the needs of our own “dear Leader” to whom, one of his sychophants, Amarosa, has already said, we will all bow down.

Donald Trump has never involved himself in any cause greater than himself, or even that did not help himself. His hotels and golf courses and condos are not affordable by ordinary Americans. He believes workers are overpaid, he stiffs workers and vendors, he lies about providing child care to employees, he will not even sacrifice some profits to bring his own businesses to the US and provide jobs for Americans… what makes anyone believe that he has the remotest interest in achieving anything for them unless it enhances the power and fortunes of Donald Trump?

People do not realize how close we came before to a destruction of our democracy. Had one man, crusty old Judge John Sirica, not been offended by recognizing the Watergate burglars were lying to him, and had two enterprising reporters for the Washington Post not dedicated themselves to ferreting out the truth, had a disgruntled FBA official not helped them, it is possible that Nixon’s attempt to rig the election, suppress criticism, and take revenge against his enemies may have succeeded. They had fire-bombed the Brookings Institute, and burglarized Daniel Ellsberg’s psychiatrist, and spread false rumors about John Kerry when he was merely a Vietnam veteran who spoke eloquently against the war.

And, Nixon had a much deeper understanding, and at least grudging respect for, democratic institutions. Donald Trump has none of this, and makes no pretense about it.

Trump’s narcissism gives him an insatiable need for power and praise. His sociopathy enables him to do anything, absolutely anything, to obtain it.

Vladimir Putin is Trump’s role model. Trump will strive to be a greater Putin, because he will control a country that is, already, bigger and greater.

No one will stop him.

10 Compliments People Pay That Are Just Plain Ageist

The road to hell is indeed paved with good intentions. As we wrote earlier this year, words can hurt, even the well-meaning ones. Studies have shown that our perception of aging impacts just how well we handle it, and that the subtleties of our language matter. As such, we’d like to stomp out these phrases that demean older people — whether they are meant as compliments or not:

1. When a waiter asks an older woman, “What can I get for you today, young lady?”

Hmmm. Maybe start with an order of respect, followed by a main course of dignity? The waiter should greet the woman as he would any other customer. Ageism occurs when people aren’t age-blind. The waiter would never ask a teenager, “Would you like ground pepper with that, Grandma?” now would he?

DAVID SACKS VIA GETTY IMAGES

When a waiter asks an older woman, “What can I get for you today, young lady?” our skin crawls just a little.

2. “My grandparents are so adorable.”

Adorable is for babies and puppies. It is not a term of endearment when applied to someone in their 60s, 70s or 80s. It makes many older people cringe because they feel they are being infantilized. “Infantilizing [language] can make us think (and make older people feel) as if they are incompetent or irrelevant,” Tracey Gendron, an assistant professor of gerontology at Virginia Commonwealth University, told The Huffington Post.

Research shows that older people are seen as high in warmth and low in competence. And the language that we use to talk about and to older adults fuels this perception. “We should use the same language that we use when talking to anyone else,” said Gendron.

A study by Gendron, published last summer in The Gerontologist, took a look at ageism in tweets sent by students participating in a senior mentoring program. After each visit with an older adult, participants posted their reactions on Twitter.

Twelve percent of these tweets contained discriminatory language, Gendron found. Some seemed benign on the surface. As one wrote, “What a sweet woman! I especially love her little winks (#herecomestrouble).”

In short: Let’s lose “adorable,” “cute,” and “sweet.”

Can’t two older people be loving without it being labeled “adorable,” “cute” or “sweet?”

3. “She’s 75 years young.”

It’s said with a smile and meant to elicit a laugh, but this comment also says something else. It says that “young” is a good thing, which when flipped around, makes being “old” a bad thing. There is nothing wrong with being older; in many cultures the elderly are valued for their knowledge, wisdom and insights. Stop acting like being older is something to be unhappy about.

“When we use the word ‘young’ for the default of what is good and ‘old ‘as the expression of what is negative or bad, we are tripping over into ageist language,” said Gendron. She told The Huffington Post, “yes, this is often done unintentionally.” Unintentionally is still bad.

4. “You are only 70 … oh, you’re not old.”

Once again, notes Gendron, “we are saying that being ‘old’ is bad.”

5. “You don’t look 65 years old.”

First of all, there’s no logic to this one. If I’m 65, then this is what 65 looks like. The problem is in the speaker’s perception of what a 65-year-old should look like — and the underlying assumption that looking younger is a better thing.

6. “You are still ….”

“Still” is one of those words that reeks of ageism. An example, “He is 85 and is still volunteering!” The word “still” is a qualifier here and expresses the belief that the activity is surprising for someone of that age. When we set ourselves up to believe that aging is all about decline and that “old” is a bad thing to be, we are developing internalized ageism, says Gendron. Internalized ageism causes negative health outcomes (higher blood pressure for example) and can cause social isolation because we then don’t want to associate with those “old people” when we are older. In other words, it sets us up for “othering” ourselves away from other people, she said.

7. “You are proof that 60 is the new 40.”

What you mean is that I am energetic, engaged, maybe even know some hip places to eat. What older people hear is this: Being 60 is a bad thing.

8. “At your age, you are allowed to forget some things!”

Age-blaming is a slippery slope. Having a “senior moment” has become synonymous with being forgetful. Memory loss is not the sole purview of older people. And not every person who locks their keys in the car is older. We all forget things when we are stressed out, over scheduled, and didn’t get enough rest. How about just assuming that older people have the same issues as everyone else and their age had nothing to do with the fact they forgot to pick up milk at the market?

9. “My mom is the best!” (followed by a text she sent you in which she appears stupid or tech-illiterate).

If you think so highly of your mom, why are you so eager to publicly shame her? Most likely she missed something that autocorrect did — like you’ve never done that, right? You are sharing your mom’s text because you think older people don’t understand technology and you find that funny. What you are really doing is reinforcing a stereotype — one that translates into older workers being unable to get hired at jobs they are perfectly capable of doing. Older people may not have been born with smartphones in their hands, but that is not to say we can’t figure out how to use one.

Please quit the tech-shaming unless you want to see those baby photos where you’re naked in the bathtub show up on Facebook. Yes, we know how to upload photos.

10. “Wow! You’re sharp as a tack.”

Why does this surprise you? Everyone ages differently, and yes, while memory issues are real, don’t assume that all older people have lost theirs. In the same vein, doctors should speak directly to their older patients, not about them to their patients’ adult children.

In general,  it’s a problem when people conflate aging with being ill or disabled. The normal slowing down of the body is not an illness. And as Gendron notes, ageism really makes no sense since we are all aging.

I Never Understood Depression Until my Mother Died From It

Growing up with a depressed parent was normal. Does that make sense? I didn’t know any difference. I thought every parent cried themselves to sleep. That all mothers ended up in the psych ward at least 5x times a year. That most parents had addiction issues and thus slip ups happened every now and then. Because that was my normal. Depression was our family’s normal. We didn’t live by days of the week so much or special events; I measured time in the dark and light bouts of her illness

My normal was doctors and meds being prescribed to her; her lazy Susan of pills that sat upon our microwave. The AA and NAA meetings that I sat and coloured through. My normal was a mother who sat in her room for hours and hours on end. Alone and weeping. Zero laughter. Very little excitement or enthusiasm for life. And almost no physical touch. Almost as if the zest of anything had been squeezed out with such violence that only a shadow of a person prepared meals and drove me places.

I thought everyone at 14 had mothers who cut their faces in a fit of rage within their depression. Then I visited my “best friend” and realized that wasn’t true. So I didn’t say anything. Because talking about it only deepened the realization that depression not only consumed our household; but stalked me in my mind. Always pretending things were better then they were. Never sharing the intensity behind the abuse that came with this mental illness. This illness that I despised. That I hated. It wouldn’t ever touch me.

So forgive me. I didn’t understand depression. I wanted to. I really did. It missed me in the the passing of genes and I’ve never experienced it myself. I’ve lived it; I’ve been a one woman audience to the chaos it brings. But the actual all knowing feeling isn’t something I am intimately in tune with. Just like I can’t comprehend not being able to take care of your children. Or cutting your wrists because the pain is so bad. Or requiring your child to parent you through another psych ward intake as you beg the doctors to admit her because you can’t do another night of suicide watch. It doesn’t make sense to me. And if that comes across critical please know that’s not the purpose. I genuinely cannot psychically fathom those feelings and emotions. I don’t think I ever will. But I have dug deep; done the first hand research of this disease. For most of my life I had zero empathy for my mother and her “issues.” Why couldn’t she snap out of it? Often in her darkest days I would scream and scream for her to figure herself out. Get her act together and move on. Why did it haunt her day in and out. It looked like such a weakness to me. Until the depression killed her and she committed suicide. And then something clicked.

I’m embarrassed to say for many years I judged. Full on gavel in hand judged. And I am sorry. So sorry. Because I was without empathy. And THAT is the worst thing you can withhold from someone suffering. Maybe it was because I was so full of rage that even as an adult I struggled to have empathy for friends with depression. I always had sympathy; but never empathy. And that’s not the same at all. Brene Brown describes the difference as: “sympathy being the pity we feel for someone else’s hardships whereas empathy is the “me too”, the act of putting yourself in their shoes.” I cringe at the thoughts that once ran through my mind. How high on my horse I sat. Because in my head if I judged it, twisted it, or mocked it – the “it” didn’t have any weight, or value. Which meant they were just “sad”. And anyone can stop being sad.

Depression isn’t sad. It isn’t a sappy movie that triggers some tears or a really good cry. It’s not Adele on a rainy day with a glass of wine. It’s not the weepy feeling we get when our monthly cycle comes, or the tears we weep when miss our best friend.

It’s torture. Absolute pure and utter torture. And I am not using that word lightly at all. It attacks the brain in ways in which those of us who aren’t struggling can’t imagine; and then we expect you to snap out of it and make dinner. As if you have any control over this all encompassing pain that you can’t shake off. It enters your soul and refuses to leave. Or allow you to get out of bed. Or pick up your crying child, or have a shower.

Imagine an open sore. On your arm or leg. One that was cut long ago. It oozes and weeps through whatever bandage you place on it. Sometimes the pain is more then you can handle and you just have to lay there, while other times you can still move but only in a fog because the throbbing is still there. It’s always there. And yet you carry on. You try to wake up, get dressed and smile. Mostly pretending. Always pretending. That is depression. The sore that may scab, hopefully scar; but always there.

Here’s what I know to be true now. About my mother who suffered and about my friends who are suffering. They aren’t sad. It’s not just a rainy cloud day. And I’m sorry I ever thought that. I’m sorry if I ever pushed you to “just smile” I wish now I hadn’t pushed so hard with my mother; as a child I didn’t comprehend it but as an adult I think she could have used some empathy. Some “me too” in my words and actions.

I couldn’t do it back then; but let me now. To my friends that are struggling to push past the pain; the mothers out there crying themselves to sleep; to those of you who struggling to wake up in the morning and start your day. Im sorry. Your pain is your own. I won’t try to fix it, change it or bandaid it. I won’t offer you 10 tips on how to smile, and I don’t want to tell you to buck up. I want to hold your hand in silence. I want to scream at the world with you and rub your back as you weep. We both know your strong, we both know you can push past this; and if you need me to remind you of this I always will.

Watch Barbara Lee Predict 15 Years Ago That Congress Was OK’ing Endless War

WASHINGTON ― It’s been 15 years since Congress gave the president the authority to take military action against any country or person connected to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, at any time, without additional congressional approval.

It was an unprecedented Authorization for Use of Military Force, sweeping in scope and with no expiration date. It also came at a frantic time. The attacks had happened just days earlier, and Americans’ fear and anger were high. People were grieving the loss of loved ones.

The 2001 AUMF was written quickly and runs just 60 words. When it came up in the Senate, not a single senator opposed it. The House passed it by a 420-1 vote. There was next to no debate.

That lone holdout was Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.). Her fear was that Congress was signing a blank check for endless war. Lee’s voice cracked with emotion as she spoke in the House on Sept. 14, 2001, trying to make sense of the devastation even as she explained why she couldn’t support giving a president such unchecked power.

“However difficult this vote may be, some of us must urge the use of restraint,” Lee said. “Our country is in a state of mourning. Some of us must say let’s step back for a moment, let’s just pause and think through the implications of our actions today so that this does not spiral out of control.”

Watch her speech here:

Lee was clearly in the minority when the vote came down that day, but 15 years later, she appears to have been right.

Since the 2001 AUMF took effect, it has been used to justify 37 military actions in 14 countries, as well as indefinite detention of individuals at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

President Barack Obama says it covers attacks on Islamic State militants without new authorization. The Islamic State, or ISIS, is an offshoot of al Qaeda, the group behind the 9/11 attacks, the administration argues, so the 2001 AUMF applies. Nearly 5,000 U.S. military personnel are in Iraq and Syria helping to fight ISIS under that authority. Billions of dollars have been spent battling the extremist group without a debate or vote in Congress on the parameters of the war.

Future presidents can unilaterally send in more U.S. troops and launch additional attacks, too, if they make the case there is a connection to al Qaeda.

Lee’s moment of dissent is perhaps her proudest vote to date. She frequently cites it in war-related debates, and on Wednesday, she launched a petition campaign urging Congress to repeal the 2001 AUMF and debate the proper parameters for a new AUMF specific to the war against ISIS. Congress has shown little willingness to take on the issue, but the California Democrat isn’t ready to stop pushing.

“The Constitution is clear: Congress has an obligation to give the American people a voice on matters of war and peace,” Lee said in a statement. “How can we ask our brave men and women in uniform to fight a war that Congress lacks the courage to even debate?”

Don’t Choke: How To Conquer Paralysis By Analysis

It’s one thing to achieve mastery. It is quite another to be able to perform under pressure. Psychologist Sian Beilock, author of Choke: What the Secrets of the Brain Reveal About Getting it Right When You Have To, defines choking as suboptimal performance, not just poor performance.

It’s a performance that is inferior to what you can do and have done in the past and occurs when you feel pressure to get everything right.

The most painful part about choking is that you know you can and have done better.

Choking can occur regardless of the number of hours spent practicing. Examples in sports abound. Golfer Greg Norman painfully choked at the 1996 US Masters. Entering the final round he had a six-stroke lead over Nick Faldo and then blew it. Snow boarding champion Shaun White famously missed winning gold at the 2014 Olympic winter games.

Why does the brain sabotage performance just when it matters most? Beilock believes that overthinking the situation is the problem. She calls it paralysis by analysis. Paralysis by analysis occurs when we try too hard to control every little thing. This over-attention to detail interferes with the fluidity and flow of well-rehearsed skills and ultimately undermines the ability to do something that would normally be relatively easy.

You don’t need to be a star athlete to experience choking. It can happen to any of us at key moments. A student who fails even though she was prepared for a test, an entrepreneur who freezes while presenting to potential investors, a well-qualified applicant who blows a key interview.

Try the following tricks to help you stay at the top of your game:

1. Say Om

Meditating before the big event calms the mind, reduces anxiety and increases cognitive horsepower.

2. Practice Under Pressure

Train under conditions that simulate the stress of the actual event. This will mentally prepare you for the real deal

3. Have a “Go-To Mantra

For golfers, a simple thought like “Smooth” or “Nice and Easy” just before hitting the ball can do the trick.

4. Whistle While you Work

According to Beilock:

If the tasks are automatic and you have done them a thousand times in the past, a mild distraction such as whistling can help them run off more smoothly under pressure.

5. Put Pen to Paper

Taking a few minutes to write down your worries before a test or presentation will help you stay focused on the topic and reduce forgetfulness due to stress.

Don’t let your brain sabotage your success.

Sadly, This Is The Top Vegetable 1-Year-Olds In America Eat

Nutrition during the 1,000 days between a child’s conception and their second birthday is critical to their future success, dictating both brain and physical development.

And yet the vegetable American toddlers are most likely to eat is a french fry.

Child health advocates gathered on Capitol Hill Wednesday to mark the release of a new report, “The First 1,000 Days: Nourishing America’s Future,” which documents the scourge of malnutrition in the U.S.

1,000 Days, a nonprofit that advocates nationally and globally for better early nutrition, produced the report, which highlights the economic gap that prevents many families from meeting some of the World Health Organization’s basic nutritional standards.

The report highlights a number of factors: Nearly half of U.S. women gain an excessive amount of weight during pregnancy, which can lead to higher rates of obesity in children. And only 22 percent of infants are exclusively breastfed to 6 months, which the WHO recommends due to breastmilk’s unparalleled nutritional properties. Those deficiencies are largely due to a lack of institutional support, as less than half of moms receive any paid time off after childbirth, limiting their ability to breastfeed.

The report also found that at least 40 percent of parents introduce solid foods and sugary drinks to their children too early, and one in four toddlers don’t receive enough iron in their diet.

That doesn’t even begin to address all the economic factors at play.

“Half of the babies born in this country are participating in Women, Infants and Children program here in the United States,” Lucy Sullivan, the executive director of 1,000 Days, said on Capitol Hill Wednesday, referring to the program commonly known as WIC.

“That’s a reminder that the problems we are dealing with is not a small population over here somewhere in the U.S. that maybe looks like the population of a developing country,” she added. “It is all of us. The face of hunger and malnutrition looks like America.”

Hugh Welsh, the president of DSM, a major global producer of vitamins, minerals and nutrition supplements, highlighted the lack of understanding in the U.S. about the dire need for a well-balanced mix of vitamins and nutrients.

“I could travel to Malawi, and everyone there would understand, but I could travel to Milwaukee and no one would understand what I was talking about with micronutrients,” he said.

In the first 1,000 days of a child’s life, the brain needs the proper mix of nutrients to fully form. Without enough iron or specific vitamins, a child’s brain may never form all its potential synapses. They can also be physically weaker, and the combination can set the child up to be less competitive in the workforce later in life and raise their health care costs.

Experts also worry that the nutritional diets of infants today mimic those of a growing number of overweight and obese American adults, setting them up for a lifetime unhealthy food choices and health problems.

The face of hunger and malnutrition looks like America.
Lucy Sullivan, Executive Director of 1,000 Days

Barbara Bush, daughter of former President George W. Bush and the CEO and co-founder of Global Health Corps, stressed the irreversibility of the first 1,000 days.

“You can’t catch up,” she told The Huffington Post. “It will impact everything you do, whether that be how you learn or if you can learn fully and all of your mechanisms to engage in life.”

Rep. Lynn Jenkins (R-Kan.) echoed Bush: “These children are losing the chance to reach their full potential before they even get started.”

Advocates said they were pleased the USDA and the Department of Health and Human Services have started to develop the first-ever dietary guidelines for children under the age of 2, but those standards are not expected until 2020. The panel and congressional leaders highlighted the need for legislation about increased nutritional information and paid family leave.

Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) said the issue requires bipartisan action.

“This has to be a commitment to putting kids, and their need for access to food and nutrition, in the front of the agenda,” Casey said. He called for a Marshall Plan for the children of America, much like the billions of dollars in economic support the U.S. gave to Europe after WWII.

Bush echoed those calls to action, stressing that America’s children need access to these fundamental nutrients as they grow.

“The most devastating part is when you are 2 years old and younger, you don’t have a lot of control over your life,” she said. “But it can have an impact on your life in perpetuity.”

This Stroke Victim Was Jailed For Smoking Pot And Couldn’t Afford $100 Bail. He Died In Custody.

WASHINGTON ― When Jamycheal Mitchell, a mentally ill 24-year-old, died at Hampton Roads Regional Jail last August after his arrest for a $ 5 theft, reporters and state officials jumped to investigate. The jail has since come under intense scrutiny, and last week Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring requested a federal civil rights investigation into the conditions inside the facility.

But less than three months after Mitchell died, a 60-year-old man named Mark Goodrum, who faced a misdemeanor charge for smoking marijuana in his own home, was rushed from the same jail to a nearby medical center, where he died.

Goodrum’s death, unlike Mitchell’s, did not receive news coverage. Most jail deaths, even at controversial facilities like Hampton Roads, don’t attract the attention of the national media or state attorneys general. So Goodrum’s death was reported for the first time in The Huffington Post’s jail deaths investigation, which set out to record every jail death that took place in the year after Sandra Bland died in Texas on July 13, 2015. Only Goodrum’s name and date of death ― Nov. 13, 2015 ― appeared on the state records we obtained through a public records request. Now we have more details.

Goodrum had severe medical issues, and although there are well-documented problems with medical care at Hampton Roads Regional Jail, it is not yet clear whether jail officials are at fault in his death.

What we do know is that Goodrum spent a month in custody, and that he only ended up there because he couldn’t come up with $ 100 to purchase his freedom — all for smoking marijuana in his own home.

The Huffington Post was able to piece together some of the details of Goodrum’s story through interviews, public records requests and a review of court records and social media.

On the afternoon of Jan. 8, 2014, two city police officers were dispatched to a towering apartment building in Newport News, Virginia, after residents complained about the smell of marijuana on the first floor. In a report, an officer and his partner reported detecting a “strong odor of marijuana” as they approached the door. When they knocked, Mark Goodrum answered.

Although much of the report is redacted, records indicate that Goodrum was cited for misdemeanor possession of marijuana, and material suspected to be marijuana was seized from the home. The victim in the report was listed as the “Commonwealth of Virginia.”

Public records indicate that Goodrum was soon evicted from that apartment. He missed his first court date, then suffered a serious medical setback.

“He had a stroke,” Elvis Blunt, a friend who had served as caretaker for Goodrum, said in an interview. “He lost all movement on his right side, and then he was an amputee so [he] only had one leg, and that was on his left side, and his right leg didn’t work no more. He was pretty much bedridden.”

As he continued dealing with his medical issues, Goodrum missed another court date. He faced two additional charges for failure to appear, and warrants were put out for his arrest.

Goodrum didn’t exactly hide his love of marijuana. His Facebook cover photo was an American flag rolling paper filled with buds, and his last name on the social network was a marijuana reference. (Elvis Blunt, on the other hand, really is named Elvis Blunt.) When a friend started a crowdfunding campaign for Goodrum, he wrote a post reassuring potential donors that he wouldn’t be spending the money on marijuana. But Blunt, who said he has spent time in prison, said that Goodrum was just a marijuana user, not a dealer.

“He couldn’t go nowhere,” Blunt said. “That’s just what he did to cope with his pain.”

Court records show that Goodrum fell behind on rent at another apartment shortly before his death. Goodrum did not show up in court ― he may have been unable to ― and a default judgment was entered against him on Oct. 9, 2015. Officers arrested him a few days later.

“When he got evicted, the police came and found out he had the warrants, and they locked him up,” Blunt said.

Goodrum “was all right until he got locked up,” Blunt said. “When he got locked up, he died.”

Goodrum arrived at Hampton Roads Regional Jail on Oct. 14, 2015, Lt. Col. Eugene Taylor, an assistant superintendent at the jail, told HuffPost. Goodrum was being held on two bonds for $ 1,000, one secured and one unsecured. If he’d had $ 100, he likely could have paid a bail bondsman a 10 percent fee and been released until his court date. Like thousands of other people in the U.S. every day, Goodrum only remained locked up because of his lack of funds.

“There’s widespread evidence that cash bonds don’t do a thing to ensure an appearance, and people should not be held just because they can’t post a bond,” said Maria Jankowski, deputy executive director of the Virginia Indigent Defense Commission, which certifies lawyers to represent indigent clients in court. “It’s unfortunate and wrong, if you want my opinion, but I’ve seen it happen.”

Goodrum was represented by a public defender, according to a Newport News court official. Neither the public defender nor the judge who oversaw the case responded to a request for comment.

“He was all right until he got locked up… When he got locked up, he died.”

Goodrum did have serious medical issues. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Virginia told HuffPost that Goodrum died of “end stage renal disease” ― that is, kidney disease ― and that he had a history of “hemodialysis, hypertension, anemia of chronic disease, peripheral vascular disease, tobacco use, diabetes mellitus, and history of stroke contributing.”

But Hampton Roads Regional Jail was recently named the deadliest jail in Virginia by the Richmond Times-Dispatch, which noted that inmates there died nearly nine times more often than at any local or regional jails in Virginia over the past three years. The Huffington Post’s analysis places Hampton Roads Regional Jail among the deadliest jails in the U.S., with more deaths than some facilities several times its size.

Reviews of records kept by NaphCare, the jail’s former medical provider, “raised significant concerns regarding the quality of assessment, care, follow-up, and documentation,” according to the Virginia Office of the State Inspector General.

Although NaphCare is no longer in charge of medical operations at the facility, simply changing up the medical provider “offers limited promise of improvement in care or documentation in the absence of a change in oversight practices,” the State Inspector General report said. A federal civil rights lawsuit filed by Jamycheal Mitchell’s family alleges that NaphCare and its employees “failed, among other things, to carry out basic procedures and provide proper care” at Hampton Roads Regional Jail.

Goodrum’s daughter, who did not respond to HuffPost’s requests for comment, wrote after his death that she was disturbed by what happened to her father.

“I am besides myself with regret that he was alone in his final hours and had been in the jail last month on some ridiculous weed charge,” she wrote in an online tribute. “He deserved better.”

In the meantime, Hampton Roads Regional Jail is currently accepting applications for guard positions. Although a pending charge of misdemeanor marijuana possession may have kept a poor person like Goodrum locked up there for a month, a similar conviction wouldn’t necessarily keep candidates off the guard force. Only convictions involving “drugs other than marijuana” are automatically disqualifying.

Last month, another man, 60-year-old Henry Clay Stewart, died at Hampton Roads Regional Jail. Stewart, locked up for violating probation on a shoplifting charge, was barely able to eat for two weeks and was vomiting blood and begging guards for help before he died, according to stories published last week by the Richmond Times-Dispatch and The Virginian-Pilot.

Henry Stewart’s mother, Martha, who has terminal lung cancer, wondered in an interview with The Virginian-Pilot whether others have died at Hampton Roads Regional Jail without anyone noticing. “Who knows how many have died in there and they got away with it?” she said.

In addition to Jamycheal Mitchell and Mark Goodrum, The Huffington Post logged four more deaths at Hampton Roads Regional Jail between July 13, 2015, and July 13, 2016:

  • William Thrower, 69, died on March 20 of acute gallstone pancreatitis with hypertensive atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease contributing.
  • Christopher Boyce died on March 23 of hepatic failure with hepatitis C and cirrhosis contributing.
  • Ronnie Lee Proffitt, 69, died on April 27 of acute coronary insufficiency due to congestive heart failure.
  • Valerie Anderson, 60, died on May 26, the day after she was transferred from Hampton Roads Regional Jail to a mental health facility. Her family was never notified of her death.

Although the state of Virginia logged just 27 jail deaths in 2013 and averaged 38 deaths a year from 2000 to 2013, HuffPost identified 50 deaths between July 13, 2015, and July 13, 2016, which would be the second highest number of jail deaths recorded in the state in a single year since 2000.

Angle of Descent, Part II — Seeds of Despair

2016-08-31-1472603074-5248589-AngleofDescent2.jpg

(Introduction / Part One / Part Two / Part Three / Part Four)

From Part I:
Somehow we have arrived at a moment in time when the entrance of a perceived tough and cunning figure with no need to talk in full sentences has become the advent of a savior, or at least a version of one from the bowels of World Wide Wrestling. What kind of savior is this? What collective pain can account for something so bizarre that if someone told me this was occurring in a parallel universe, I would ask how it was possible?

And so I did. I began asking what was behind the media’s focus on the angry white electorate, as if anger somehow explained the collective pull toward driving off a cliff and yelling “Freedom!”

***

The starting place for me was learning just how few of us, white or minority, have a college education. And how without a college education, one is set upon by the wolves of illness, debt, and unemployment. How could this be? How is it that a college degree, though barely a starting point to get by in today’s economy, is beyond the reach of so many?

One hundred years ago, it was a novel idea that all children should go to high school. It wasn’t until 1930 that most children did. But, as Bill Gates has pointed out, high schools were never designed to send children onward to a bachelor’s degree. They were designed to prepare a workforce that could follow rules designed for factories and the emerging industrial economy. And high schools met the low bar that was expected of them.

Estimates exist that, even today, only 25% of high school graduates have the skills needed to succeed academically in college. It was not until 2011 that the census bureau reported that 30% of adults in the United States had attained a bachelor’s degree, and the figure remained about the same in the 2014 census (32%), which means about 142 million Americans do not. And while it is true that the percentage of African Americans and Latinos graduating with a bachelor’s degree is even lower than whites, the clear majority (64%) of white men and women over 25 years old are also without one.

The consequence is that large swaths of our population are economically marooned, caught between low-wage jobs on the one hand and the whims of corporate employers looking to automate or move jobs offshore on the other. Beginning in 1977, real wages for working-class men and women remained stagnant or declined over the next 30 years. For example, if the actual value of the minimum wage, $ 2.30, in 1977 was worth about $ 8 in today’s dollars, then the minimum wage in 2007, $ 7.50, was worth even less — $ 6, due to inflation. The same was true generally for the majority of working-class jobs, paying an average of $ 31,000 in today’s dollars but stagnant over almost an entire work life beginning in 1977. And this was all happening at the same time that income disparities between the working class and financial elites exploded.

Prosperity was not disappearing from the American landscape, but simply shifting. In roughly the same 30-year period when growth in workers’ wages was slowing down to a crawl, individual wealth became so concentrated that the 400 richest billionaires in the United States had an accumulated wealth equal to half that of the U.S. population (150 million people).

The staggering inequities of wealth were captured in the rising ratios between CEO pay and average annual wages for nonsupervisory labor — 20:1 in the early 1970s, doubling by the end of the decade, and then continuing on a Mount Everest-like climb to 376:1 by 2000. To put this in perspective, the average CEO compensation in 2007 was $ 18.8 million, compared with $ 31,000 for the average worker with only a high school degree and $ 15,000 for a minimum-wage job — a ratio of 1,253:1.

If these numbers aren’t troubling enough, the great recession in 2008 appeared proof that no one, even the wealthy, was minding the store. A shift in perception was taking place in the collective from a belief that success was a function of merit and effort to a recognition that the system was rigged.

“What has happened in recent years,” summarized Warren Buffett in 2012, was that “we were told a rising tide would lift all boats, but the rising tide has lifted all yachts.” What many failed to see was that our economic system was not so much rigged as designed to benefit the wealthy. And without a clear understanding of how this was accomplished, many of us were left to simply identify enemies and scapegoats. Was it the 1% we should be angry with? Wall Street hedge fund managers? Banks? Immigrants? Or those we deemed too lazy or criminal to find success? It was a muddle.

The 3 Forces: The Perfect Storm Making Medical Errors the 3rd Leading Cause of Death

I previously posted twice on the scientific review paper led by Hopkins’ researcher Martin Makary, MD, that concluded medical errors are the nation’s third leading cause of death.

2016-09-05-1473108332-3523994-Medicaldeaths.jpg

The raw estimate of 251,000 deaths per year is mind-numbing. What is even more disturbing is that the morbidity and mortality seems to be intractable. The number is not heading south, despite the 100,000 Lives Campaign from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. Medicine’s initiative to just-say-no to over-performance of services, Choosing Wisely: Things Providers Should Question has also not turned the tide. The estimate is up from the seminal work in 2000 from Barbara Starfield, MD, MPH that put the medical industry’s death rate at 225,000 per year.

Since the number doesn’t seem to be moving, reason suggests that powerful forces are holding the stasis. What are the barriers, then? My reflections led to a column in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine that is summarized here. Might it be the case that these 3 forces, together, will always create such havoc?

2016-09-05-1473108544-9342736-pillspain.jpg

  1. The production focus of the medical industry Both CFOs of medical delivery organizations and the 80/20 rule of the insurers perversely incentivize doing more – and working faster. It’s why the best players in regular medicine are promoting a revolution toward the Triple Aim and a “value-based” orientation. The present industry errs on the side of doing more in tertiary care while also promoting the fewest minutes possible of primary care practitioner contact. Produce!
  2. The limited state of quality decision-making tools/evidence We wouldn’t have a move for “evidence-based medicine” if medicine was already in that category. The most frank statement on this topic that I have heard recently was from a University of Pittsburgh Medical Center CMO that in regular medicine “only about a quarter of what we do has strong evidence and we only do that about half the time.”
  3. The reductive biomedical mindset In this industry, research, delivery, and payment each dance around a pole planted in our bodies by the dominance of the idea of a single agent, pharmaceutical, quick fix. The industry favors simplistic assessment and reductive prescription. Typical practice favors myopia.

Look at the cumulative effects. An industrial orientation to push to do more, faster, of what is most productive, remunerative (and dangerous). Making matters worse, this perversely-incented situation is guided by grossly incomplete evidence. Compounding the potential for misguided choices is that the evidence that is relied upon – when it exists – is a function of tunnel vision. The evidence base is infused by philosophically reductive preference for biomedical indicators rather than the complexity of the whole human being who walks through the door.

2016-09-06-1473174963-5324502-perfectstorm.jpg

Here is one way to look at the portrait that emerges. Think of a hormonally-hyped, know-it-all and intoxicated adolescent at the wheel of a car: fast-paced activity amid tremendous ambiguity and compromised vision. Is this not a perfect storm for running a car into a telephone pole? Or to guarantee high levels of medical error and medical death?

Integrative health and medicine bring to this deeply and chronically embedded calculus of US medicine the revolutionary requirement to examine the whole person and system. Then, as holistically, the job of the practitioner team is to use all appropriate products, practitioners and practitioners. Placing the whole person at the center of care disrupts the focus on production, and on the biomarkers. The dance with evidence shifts. As such, the integrative health model is a fulcrum to overturn the tables of the industry’s status quo.

The suggestion from this perfect storm is that we will not end medical deaths by focusing on excising errors from the existing way of doing business. It is important that we seek to engage these reductive solutions, through campaigns for hand-washing and other such 100,000 Lives methods. Yet at the same time, we need to acknowledge – as the value-based medicine movement is doing – that our present orientation in the way we do the business of medicine is and always will be a massive, guaranteed, error and death generator.

I believe that this is commonsense. Yet the Catch 22 for medical reform is that commonsense appears not to be an attribute of a reductive mind, but of a whole system one.

Wartime Decatur

Wartime Decatur

Decatur has a long history of patriotic service, both on and off the field of battle. Decatur volunteers participated in six major campaigns including the Black Hawk War (1832), the Mexican War (1846-1848), the Civil War (1861-1865), the Spanish-American War (1898), World War I (1917-1918), and World War II (1941-1945). Their record of distinguished service includes the presence of five generals and six Congressional Medal of Honor winners in the Civil War. The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), the first national veterans’ organization, was founded in Decatur immediately after the Civil War. In World War II, soldiers from Decatur served in North Africa, Italy, the Philippines, and Germany. Equally impressive, however, is the tradition of the Decatur Canteen, which served food to transient soldiers from the time of the Civil War onward. Local volunteers rolled bandages, collected food, and recycled bales of paper and heaps of scrap metal. Citizens planted victory gardens and bought war bonds and savings stamps. Wartime Decatur: 1832-1945 documents the vigorous wartime culture based on community involvement and a strong sense of patriotism.

Joe Biden Shuts Down Iraq War Protester

Vice President Joe Biden shut down an Iraq war protester on Thursday by invoking the memory of his late son, an Iraq war veteran, and inviting the man to talk with him privately.

Biden was interrupted by the man as he campaigned for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton at a rally in Cleveland.

“My friends died,” yelled the man, who was protesting Clinton’s vote to authorize the Iraq war.

The crowd attempted to drown out the man with chants of “Hillary!” But Biden engaged with him.

“Will you listen? So did my son, OK?” Biden responded.

Watch the video above.

Biden’s son, Beau, died of terminal brain cancer last year. He served in Iraq from 2008 to 2009 as a member of the Delaware Army National Guard and received a Bronze Star.

“Come back here after to talk to me about this,” Biden told the protester. “You have my permission.”

Why I Forgave My Brother’s Killer

I forgave my brothers killer and it changed my life

January 31, 2006 is a day that is etched in the history of my mind forever. It is the day that my brother’s life was taken abruptly from him for reasons unknown to those who love him. I will never forget the call that has subsequently changed my life, it was 3:00am and I was living up North working in a remote camp with barely any cell service, so when my phone started ringing at that early hour I was quite confused as I answered. There is nothing that could have prepared me for the words that met me on the other end, it was my father calling me to say “Call your mother, your brother’s been shot”. I had no idea what he was talking about as I frantically tried to get through to my mother, hands shaking as I punched each number in hopes of reaching her. When I couldn’t get mom on the phone I called my sister next and the first words out of her mouth dropped me to my knees “He’s gone to a better place”. I was so confused how did this happen? Why did this happen? Was this actually happening? Where was my mother?

After a few phone calls to other members of our family I was able to piece together what had happened and came to the quick realization that my brother was dead. To some degree this came as no surprise as he had led a very unsavoury life for many of his short years, he was in and out of jail and battled with addiction for as long as I could remember. Though he was troubled in his heart and his life, he was one of the most loyal, generous and loving people I have ever known. Due to his addictions and the people he was involved with, our family had often spoken about being surprised if he made it past 21. I think in hindsight we all knew he would be taken early but figured it would have been on his own accord.

For years this event cast a shadow of grief over our family, understandably my mother was distraught for years after and to some degree still is. I can remember having to check the back of my car every time I got into it at night because I was scared that someone was in the back seat waiting to shoot me. When I would be driving my car alone I was always thinking that other drivers were going to pull a gun on me if I cut them off.

The sadness that I witnessed my parents experiencing was so difficult as there was no words that could offer any real comfort. My brother left behind a young daughter when he passed, one that he was never quite able to get to know and parent like he would have wanted to. Our family dynamic changed, with each member grieving in their own way and not really understanding how the others were dealing with their pain. Where closeness should have developed and strengthened, we experienced separation, frustration, judgement and sorrow.

10 years has passed since that day and I realized that I was still experiencing so many confusing and consuming feelings surrounding his death because we never really had closure. His killer was never identified (though there have been many stories over the years, no one has ever been charged), his case is still an open investigation and his belongings are evidence. My mother every year goes to the police station and asks what they have been doing to find his killer, and every year is not satisfied with the answer. This experience, and the person responsible was still taking up so much of our space internally and I came to the realization after a conversation with my mom, that we had given him far more than he intended to take. We had been giving this person our happiness, our trust, our energy for years and years and that didn’t make sense to me any longer. He had taken 10 years of our lives along with taking my brother, neither of which he deserved.

I made the decision this year that this year would be my year of forgiveness. In order to really LIVE the rest of my life I had to be free of the things that were weighing me down, and the anger I felt towards his killer was the heaviest energy I could think of. Deciding to forgive this person was incredibly difficult for me, as a part of me felt like I would be lessening his life, or my love/loyalty to him in doing so. After some serious talking to myself and asking guidance from my brother, the conclusion was clear. Forgiveness wasn’t a weakness done out of disrespect, rather it was strength, love and courage triumphing.

Since offering forgiveness, I have experienced an enlightening and awakening of self that I have never experienced. I have been able to realize the power of our emotions and words, and how what we think, speak and feel impacts not only our selves but all of those in our energetic path. By releasing my emotional hold on this experience, I have been able to open myself up to more of the wonderful and incredible that life has to offer. When we are holding on so tightly to the poor experiences in our lives, we aren’t allowing ourselves to attach to the opportunities all around us for growth, empowerment and self betterment. In paying respect to the departed and in honouring myself, it became to clear that forgiveness was the only option. Attack with love and you will drive out the hate. Hate in the hearts of our people is what causes situations like this to exist and to keep our global society in a saddened and disheartened state. When we are able to light the night with the warm glow of kindness, compassion, forgiveness and love, we light the way for others who are lost.

My brother was lost for many years, trapped in a life that wasn’t meant for him but lacked the ability to ever fully disengage. His death was a new beginning for him, and for his family. He taught me during his time on earth that loyalty is favoured above all, the forgiveness and release of emotion towards his killer is allowing me to live the life I was meant for. By living my best life and not allowing someone else’s actions to guide my emotions, is the best form of bravery and loyalty to the lessons he taught me in his life I can imagine.

To my brother, I thank you for the teachings you shared and the strength you instilled.

Study Finds Strong Link Between Zika And Guillain-Barre Syndrome

A comparison of rates of Guillain-Barre syndrome before and after Zika arrived in seven countries has found a strong association between the virus and the illness, researchers from the Pan American Health Organization said on Wednesday.

The current Zika outbreak was first detected in Brazil last year and has since spread across the Americas and the Caribbean.

Pregnant women are considered to be at greatest risk because the virus can cause severe birth defects, including microcephaly, which is marked by small head size and underdeveloped brains. In Brazil, Zika has been linked to more than 1,800 cases of microcephaly.

The first alarms over Zika in Brazil, however, occurred months before microcephaly cases emerged, as adults recovering from Zika infections appeared to have higher-than-normal rates of Guillain-Barre, an autoimmune disorder in which the body attacks itself in the aftermath of an infection, typically occurring in the days following an illness.

In a report published as a letter to the editor of the New England Journal of Medicine, Dr. Marcos Espinal, director of the department of communicable disease at PAHO – the regional arm of the World Health Organization – and colleagues analyzed rates of Guillain-Barre syndrome and Zika in Bahia, Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Honduras, Suriname and Venezuela.

They evaluated a total of 164,237 confirmed and suspected cases of Zika virus disease and 1,474 cases of Guillain-Barre that occurred between April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2016, using data collected through official country reports.

Their analysis found a close association between increases in Zika cases and increases in Guillain-Barre. As Zika infections waned in a country, incidence of Guillain-Barre waned as well, the team found.

Compared with pre-Zika rates, Guillain-Barre increased 172 percent in the state of Bahia, Brazil, which was hard hit by the Zika outbreak. They saw similar increases in other countries, with Guillain-Barre cases rising 211 percent in Colombia, 150 percent in the Dominican Republic, 100 percent in El Salvador, 144 percent in Honduras, 400 percent in Suriname and 877 percent in Venezuela.

The team found no link between Guillain-Barre and dengue, a closely related virus that had been suspected as a contributor to the increase in cases.

Based on their findings, the researchers said Zika and Guillain-Barre “are strongly associated,” however, they said more study is needed to prove direct causation.

Guillain-Barre causes gradual weakness in the legs, arms and upper body, and in some cases, temporary paralysis. Patients often require intensive care and a respirator to support breathing.

Given these demands, the researchers said Zika imposes “a substantial burden” on populations in Latin America and the Caribbean, where some 500 million people are at risk.

Supreme Court Is About To Get A Good Look At How North Carolina Messes With Voting Rules

Late last month, a federal appeals court struck down North Carolina’s restrictive voting law, noting that it targeted African Americans “with almost surgical precision” and likening it to the worst of Jim Crow-era laws.

Even as Gov. Pat McCrory (R) is imploring the Supreme Court to put the ruling on hold, the North Carolina Republican Party is acting as if the decision never happened.

In striking down the law, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit effectively restored seven days of early voting that North Carolina lawmakers had taken away ― bringing the total to 17 ― thus benefitting minority voters. Many of them take advantage of features such as Sunday voting, same-day registration and extended voting hours ahead of Election Day.

But the appeals court didn’t tell North Carolina what to do with the restored days ― only that they needed to be restored. And the state’s board of elections went along, setting Oct. 20 as the start for early voting in North Carolina but leaving it up to each of North Carolina’s 100 county boards to specify what rules to follow on those days.

That left an opening for Republicans. And on Sunday, they struck: County election boards should “make party line changes to early voting,” the state GOP’s executive director, Dallas Woodhouse, wrote in a memo sent to GOP election officials and later obtained by The News and Observer.

“Our Republican Board members should feel empowered to make legal changes to early voting plans, [which] are supported by Republicans.”
Dallas Woodhouse, executive director of the North Carolina Republican Party

“Our Republican Board members should feel empowered to make legal changes to early voting plans, that are supported by Republicans,” Woodhouse wrote in emails sent to county board members, the majority of whom lean Republican because they’re appointed by party leadership. “Republicans can and should make party line changes to early voting.”

The Supreme Court and election law experts have long struggled to set guidelines for when race and party affiliation, which are closely linked, may or may not be used when changing the rules of elections.

And for Woodhouse ― who calls himself “an unabashed partisan” ― it seems as though tweaking the rules of early voting is nothing more than kowtowing to party interests, not an exercise in invidious racial discrimination. (His own partisan brother appears to think otherwise.)

You be the judge ― these are some of the legal changes Woodhouse suggested to election officials:

Limited hours and thus fewer opportunities for same-day registration, which Woodhouse said is “ripe for voter fraud.” Yet the 4th Circuit said that claims of in-person voter fraud in North Carolina are “merely imaginable.”

No Sunday voting, which African-American voters favor as part of “souls to the polls” drives after church on Sunday. The GOP leader justified this move as a favor to poll workers who need at least one day off after working tirelessly for six days.

No early voting at campus sites, because college students are apparently not “entitled to their own voting site.” But the measure benefits them because college students often don’t drive.

This is precisely the kind of tinkering ― benign on paper but discriminatory in practice ― that could have subjected North Carolina to federal government oversight under the Voting Rights Act of 1965. But in 2013, the Supreme Court struck a key part of it, lifting that oversight requirement from North Carolina and other states and localities with a history of voter discrimination.

In a statement, Woodhouse defended himself and his party’s positions, which seek “to preserve the integrity of the voting process so everyone’s vote is properly counted” ― a rationale for North Carolina’s restrictive law that the 4th Circuit all but discarded.

“The county board members are an independent body, and we have the right to lobby them as much as anybody else, for Republican positions,” Woodhouse said.

Perhaps. But all of this scrambling is happening just as the Supreme Court is weighing an emergency request from North Carolina to reinstate the law ― including its reduction of early voting to only 10 days. McCrory, the state governor, has called this measure, the voter ID requirement and the other provisions of the law a “model” for other states to follow.

But will the Supreme Court ― and Chief Justice John Roberts, who in 2013 said that “things have changed dramatically” in the South ― go along?

Roberts earlier this week asked the civil rights groups challenging the law to respond to the state’s request to reinstate the law by next week ― around the same time county boards in North Carolina are due to submit their local early voting plans to the State Board of Elections for approval.

Irving Joyner, a law professor and lawyer who is representing the North Carolina chapter of the NAACP in the litigation, told The Huffington Post that he and his team are monitoring what is happening at these county board meetings and collecting data. So far, he said, some counties have bucked the GOP’s wishes and offered Sunday and on-campus early voting, as well as extended hours of operation at polling sites.

But with 100 counties to keep track of, the data collection will continue until right before the advocacy groups make their case to the high court. And the more they gather, the better the picture they’ll paint for Roberts and his bench-mates.

“That will be a part of our response to the Supreme Court — to give a county by county breakdown of what is going on,” Joyner said.
